What is Boeing 787 Dreamliner which crashed in Ahmedabad?

The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner is a mid-sized, twin-engine, wide-body jet known for its fuel efficiency and innovative features. It boasts a spacious cabin, large windows, and a quieter cabin environment, contributing to a more comfortable and enjoyable passenger experience.

Launched in 2004, Boeing 787 can typically offer around 20% better fuel efficiency when compared with older, similar aircraft, and its advanced engine technology, paired with lighter composite materials, has improved the aircraft’s operating performance.

According to manufacturing company Boeing Commercial Airplanes, on nearly 5 million flights, passengers have an experience like none other in the air. Innovative interiors provide spacious cabins, better views with the largest windows available on any widebody commercial jet today, and cabin enhancements that allow passengers to arrive to their destinations feeling more refreshed.

How is Boeing 787 Dreamliner different from other aircraft?

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is different from other aircraft through its innovative design, focusing on fuel efficiency, passenger comfort, and advanced technology. It utilises composite materials for a lighter and more aerodynamic structure, contributing to reduced fuel consumption and carbon emissions. Additionally, the 787 features a more spacious and comfortable cabin environment with larger windows and improved air quality, offering passengers a more enjoyable travel experience.

The Dreamliner has two high-bypass turbofan engines that are designed specifically for the aircraft’s advanced aerodynamic structure. The aircraft’s engines are designed to climb fast, and can do so quicker than the Boeing 777-200ER or Airbus A330.

Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner Features

Lighter and Fuel Efficient

The 787-8 is designed with composite materials, which make it lighter and more fuel-efficient, reducing fuel consumption by up to 25% compared to older aircraft. This is attributed to its lighter weight, aerodynamic design, and more efficient engines.

Sustainable Design

The 787 Dreamliner is designed and built with sustainability in mind, from its composite structure to its efficient engines. Approximately 50% of the 787-8’s primary structure is made of composite materials, including the fuselage and wings, contributing to its lightweight and efficient design.

Spacious Cabin and Large Windows

The 787-8 offers a wider cabin and larger overhead storage bins, enhancing passenger comfort and convenience. The 787 features a higher cabin humidity and better air filtration, reducing passenger fatigue and improving comfort, especially on long-haul flights. The aircraft features larger windows, more than 30% larger than those on similar aircraft, offering passengers a wider view and a more enjoyable flight experience.

Enhanced Lighting

The cabin lighting can be adjusted to simulate different times of day, helping reduce jet lag and improve passenger comfort. The aircraft also boasts electronically dimmable windows, allowing passengers to adjust the amount of light entering the cabin.

Improved Air Quality

The 787-8 has an advanced air filtration system that helps maintain a cleaner cabin environment.

Quieter Cabin

The engine nacelles are designed with serrated edges to reduce noise levels inside and outside the cabin.

Smoother Ride

The 787-8’s wing design, including a high aspect ratio and raked wingtips, contributes to a smoother ride. The aircraft also features improved ergonomics and noise reduction measures to enhance crew comfort during long flights.

State-of-the-art flight deck

The aircraft incorporates a state-of-the-art flight deck with familiar Boeing controls and procedures, ensuring a smooth transition for pilots. The 787’s flight deck is equipped with advanced technology and displays, providing pilots with more information and situational awareness.

‘The bestselling passenger widebody of all time’

Manufacturing company Boeing promotes the Dreamliner as the ‘The bestselling passenger widebody of all time’

“In less than 14 years, the 787 Dreamliner fleet has carried more than one billion passengers, faster than any other widebody jet in aviation history. The airplane’s industry-leading technology creates remarkable opportunities for airlines around the world and dramatically improves the air travel experience. A lighter and robust composite structure enables airlines to reduce fuel use by up to 25 percent compared to the airplanes it replaces. The 787 has unlocked more than 425 new nonstop routes around the world, many of which were never served previously,” Boeing says.
