A Week into the US-Israel-Iran War: Assessing the Impact and Positions

The CSR Journal Magazine

One week has passed since the United States and Israel initiated coordinated military operations against Iran, resulting in the elimination of significant Iranian leadership figures, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. This escalation has led to a major regional crisis, impacting the Middle East more intensely than in decades. The operation commenced on the morning of February 28, focusing on Iran’s leadership, nuclear facilities, and missile positions. However, it rapidly expanded into a broader conflict involving Gulf nations, which have borne the consequences of Iran’s retaliatory actions.

The Course of the War

In the days following the strikes, the situation escalated dramatically. The United States, branding its operation as “Epic Fury” while Israel referred to it as “Roaring Lion,” employed over 100 aircraft in a series of airstrikes targeting government institutions, including Khamenei’s residence. One of the first significant incidents marked the tragic loss of 165 schoolgirls in a strike on a primary school in Minab, heightening public outcry. Iran retaliated by launching missiles and drones targeting Israeli and US military installations in the region, with attacks even reaching popular tourist locations in Dubai.

Escalation and Casualties

As the conflict progressed, hostilities spread further. On the second day, US forces targeted Iran’s naval capabilities, sinking nine vessels and attacking key naval and military headquarters. However, US losses were also reported, including the deaths of six personnel due to an Iranian drone strike at a facility in Kuwait. Israel faced its own challenges on the same day after an Iranian missile attack on Beit Shemesh resulted in nine fatalities.

Widening Fronts and Global Repercussions

In the following days, the conflict intensified. Hezbollah, the Lebanese militant group, began missile strikes against Israel, prompting retaliatory bombardments in Beirut that left 31 people dead. Iran’s attacks on oil infrastructure aimed at Saudi facilities significantly raised alarm across the region. The US responded with heavy bombardment and deployed advanced military equipment like B-2 bombers. During this period, Iran threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial passage for global oil transit, leading to increased volatility in energy markets.

Flight Disruptions and Economic Impact

By day seven, more than 11,000 flights in and around the affected regions were canceled due to airspace closures initiated by several Gulf countries. This disruption extended to vital transit hubs, particularly Dubai. The war has reverberated through global energy markets, with crude oil prices spiking over 10%, reaching levels not seen since the summer of 2024. Additionally, the prices of natural gas, heavily tied to LNG imports from the Middle East, also surged, causing further economic concerns globally.

Current Status of the Conflict

The ongoing conflict has now involved approximately 14 nations and continues to evolve, with intensity fluctuating. Reports indicate a significant decrease in Iranian missile and drone attacks, with claims of Israeli air superiority surfacing. Despite the loss of key figures in the Iranian leadership, the nation has shown resilience, using low-cost drones to maintain its retaliatory efforts while exerting pressure on multiple fronts. The US and Israel have not provided a clear timeframe for resolving the conflict, with officials suggesting a potentially prolonged engagement.
