Wedding Rush Fuels Surge in Weight-Loss Injections, Experts Raise Health Concerns

The CSR Journal Magazine

Weight-loss injections have gained traction among individuals preparing for weddings, according to medical experts. These treatments are reportedly being sought by both men and women who are looking to enhance their appearance prior to marriage.

Dr Ajaya Kashyap, Director of the KasMed Centre and Senior Consultant in Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery at Apollo Spectra Hospital, noted that many young individuals prioritise these treatments while searching for potential partners. He highlighted that both genders are equally interested in achieving their ideal weight ahead of their wedding day.

He specified that tirzepatide or semaglutide is the most frequently chosen option, with some couples also opting for targeted liposuction procedures. This suggests a growing trend among the youth for utilising medical interventions to achieve desired body aesthetics.

Health Risks Associated with Excessive Weight Loss

Despite the popularity of these weight-loss drugs, medical professionals are raising alarms about the negative effects they can have on facial appearance. Dr Kashyap shared a case involving a young woman who lost approximately twenty per cent of her body weight through this treatment. While the weight loss was significant, it led to undesirable outcomes, such as a gaunt facial appearance that belied her age.

Following the treatment, the patient required additional procedures to restore her youthful look. Dr Kashyap performed skin tightening and administered fat and stem cell injections to help mitigate the effects of facial fat and muscle loss caused by the weight-loss process.

He emphasised the necessity for caution, as the drugs that facilitate weight loss often contribute to muscle loss alongside the reduction of fat. According to him, numerous patients have encountered “Ozempic faces,” a term reflecting the excessive loss of facial fat and muscle linked to these treatments.

Consultation Recommendations for Safe Usage

Other medical professionals, such as Dr Gaurang Krishna, a Director and Consultant Dermatologist at MedLinks, echoed these sentiments, noting an increase in patient requests for these drugs in recent months, particularly among those gearing up for marriage. He reiterated the importance of medical supervision when considering such treatments.

Dr Krishna noted that patients are often seeking tangible results before major events like weddings, showing a trend where individuals want rapid weight loss in a short period, which raises further concerns regarding health implications.

Dr Mahesh Mangal, Chairman of the Department of Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, commented on the rise of awareness surrounding these medications, largely driven by marketing strategies. He stated that many individuals, as well as their families and friends, have begun approaching medical professionals for advice, becoming aware of these drugs through promotional content.

He cautioned that while the drugs could be considered revolutionary, the misuse and self-medication associated with them could lead to significant health risks. The Government of India has reportedly introduced regulations to curb such practices and ensure safe usage among potential users.
