Uttarakhand Experiences Heavy Snowfall, Shri Badrinath Dham Covered in Snow

The CSR Journal Magazine

In the ongoing transition towards the summer season, high-altitude regions in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district have been experiencing significant snowfall since Sunday night. The temple complex of Shri Badrinath Dham, along with the nearby Neelkanth and Narayan Parvats, is now blanketed in a thick layer of snow. The region has also recorded a notable decrease in temperatures, resulting in a return of severe cold conditions affecting both Badrinath and lower-altitude areas.

Impacts on Kedarnath and Surrounding Areas

Earlier this winter, on January 28, Kedarnath, situated in the high Himalayas, faced similar extreme winter conditions, accumulating 3 to 4 feet of snow. During that period, the temperatures dipped to -16 degrees Celsius. The Rudraprayag district administration reported that the town of Kedarnath was entirely covered in snow due to continuous snowfall in the region.

Security Measures in Response to Weather Conditions

In response to the harsh weather, the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and the Rudraprayag Police have been conducting regular patrols around the temple and in critical areas despite the challenging conditions. The security personnel have maintained their operations in the face of icy winds and extreme cold, ensuring safety and monitoring in the region. The administration acknowledged that the security arrangements at Kedarnath Dham have remained robust even in these adverse conditions.

Upcoming Events and Temple Schedule

Looking ahead, the portals of Shri Kedarnath Dham are scheduled to reopen for devotees on April 22, 2026, at 8:00 AM. The official announcement regarding the reopening was made on the occasion of Mahashivratri, based on detailed Panchang calculations at the Shri Omkareshwar Temple in Ukhimath. The announcement was attended by several dignitaries including Kedarnath Rawal Bhimashankar Ling, Kedarnath MLA Asha Nautiyal, and the Chairman of the Shri Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee, Hemant Dwivedi.
