Uttar Pradesh Scales Up Road Infrastructure to Fuel $1 Trillion Economy Vision

The CSR Journal Magazine

Uttar Pradesh has witnessed an unprecedented transformation in its transportation infrastructure as the Yogi Adityanath government accelerates efforts to position the state as a $1 trillion economy by 2029. With a strong emphasis on improving logistics and mobility, the state has developed an extensive “golden network” of expressways, national highways, state highways, and rural roads, enabling faster movement of goods and people across regions.

Expressway Network Grows from 3 to 22

Before 2017, UP had only three expressways, reflecting limited high-speed connectivity. In just a few years, the number has increased to 22, including operational, ongoing, and planned expressways expected to be completed by 2025–26.

This rapid expansion has significantly boosted transport flow, eased inter-district travel, and attracted industries seeking reliable road access. The government’s vision has turned UP into the state with the largest expressway network in India, marking a major leap in infrastructure development.

Comprehensive Road Grid Under Construction

To ensure uniform connectivity, the state is building a north–south corridor that will link major expressways such as the Ganga Expressway, the Purvanchal Expressway, and the Gorakhpur Link Expressway. Along with this, a statewide road grid connecting all district headquarters is being developed to create seamless travel routes.

This integrated design aims to reduce travel time, strengthen tourism circuits, and channel industrial investment toward interior regions that were previously underserved.

National Highway Expansion Strengthens Interstate Connectivity

National highways have become a crucial component of UP’s development roadmap. Between 2004–05 and 2023–24, the total national highway length in the state more than doubled, from 5,599 km to 12,292 km.

During the same period, UP’s share in India’s national highway network jumped from 7.48% in 2016–17 to a remarkable 41% in 2023–24. Improved interstate connectivity has enabled smoother freight movement, minimized logistics costs, and strengthened UP’s link with key industrial corridors.

Rural Roads Witness Unprecedented Growth

Rural connectivity has been a major focus under the Yogi government, particularly through the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY). Prior to 2017, progress was relatively modest, with rural road length increasing from 51,549 km in 2013–14 to just 56,846 km in 2016–17.

However, the pace accelerated dramatically after 2017. By 2024–25, total PMGSY road length in the state reached 77,425 km, ensuring better last-mile connectivity to villages. Improved rural roads have enhanced access to markets, healthcare centers, schools, and essential services, strengthening overall socioeconomic development.

A Strategic Foundation for Economic Growth

The large-scale expansion of UP’s road infrastructure is expected to play a transformative role in the state’s journey toward becoming India’s largest economy. Enhanced mobility, reduced travel time, and efficient logistics are boosting industrial productivity, improving service delivery, and supporting inclusive growth across both urban and rural regions.
