A student from Gautam Buddha University was initially issued a notice mandating a personal bond of Rs 5 lakh. This action was taken after police claimed that he had motivated fellow students to partake in a protest led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. The notice, issued to Akshat Tripathi, was revoked later on September 4, upon further review by authorities.

Tripathi firmly denied the allegations against him, asserting that his involvement in the protest was peaceful. In a video shared across social media platforms, he explained that he had not been attending classes at the university due to its closure for almost three months.

The notice had been formally issued by the Office of the Executive Magistrate, Third, Greater Noida Commissionerate, following the initiation of proceedings under Sections 126 and 135 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. The day before the notice was cancelled, a formal hearing was set for September 5.

Allegations of Misleading Information

The police’s notice included assertions that Tripathi was allegedly instigating his peers to join the CJP-led protest as well as disseminating information deemed “anti-government and misleading.” According to the police, these activities raised concerns about potential disturbances to public order.

The specifics of the notice indicated a belief that Tripathi’s actions may incite tensions within the community. He was required to demonstrate cause as to why he should not be obliged to maintain peace for a period of six months, with the requirement of securing sureties from local residents of equivalent financial standing.

It was reported that Tripathi, who resides in the Ecotech-1 area of Greater Noida and hails from Jhunsi in Prayagraj, had allegedly fostered a climate of unrest at the university campus. A police report by sub-inspector Shiva Pandey asserted that his involvement was leading to the potential for conflicts.

Community and Political Reactions

Following the withdrawal of the notice, Tripathi reiterated his stance, denying any wrongdoing and affirming that he had participated in the protest peacefully. He noted that he had sustained injuries due to the actions of the Delhi Police during an earlier protest on July 20.

The Students’ Federation of India condemned the notice issued to Tripathi, characterising it as an oppressive act. They expressed concerns regarding the Uttar Pradesh government’s actions and interactions with law enforcement.

In a reaction posted on the platform X, CJP co-convenor Saurav Das argued that the District Magistrate of Gautam Buddha Nagar had disregarded a prior Supreme Court ruling from September 1, which he contended granted immunity to all protesters involved in CJP demonstrations. He further announced that the Union government had been requested to issue clear instructions in light of this ruling.
