Uttar Pradesh Partners with AVW Global to Revive MotoGP and Introduce ARRC at BIC

The CSR Journal Magazine

The State Transformation Commission of Uttar Pradesh has formally entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with AVW Global, a motorsport consultancy established by former MotoGP rider Karel Abraham.

This agreement aims to facilitate the return of prestigious international motorcycle racing events to the state. The primary focus will be on creating a professional and structured environment for hosting both MotoGP and the Asia Road Racing Championship (ARRC) at the Buddh International Circuit (BIC).

Historical Context of MotoGP in India

India’s experiences with MotoGP have seen various ups and downs. The country hosted its first MotoGP event in 2023, but subsequent races encountered numerous logistical challenges and calendar inconsistencies.

Despite earlier aspirations for a continued presence, India was missing from the 2026 MotoGP schedule. This new agreement represents a renewed and more organized effort to reintroduce the championship in India, backed by government support aimed at ensuring sustainability.

Commitment to Structured Motorcycle Racing

Manoj Kumar Singh, CEO of the State Transformation Commission, underscored the government’s dedication to reviving motorcycle racing in a methodical and effective manner. He stated that Uttar Pradesh plans to optimize the capabilities of the Buddh International Circuit while fostering a broader ecosystem that encourages youth involvement and industry participation.

ARRC’s Potential Arrival

While the return of MotoGP may require additional negotiations and calendar coordination, the Asia Road Racing Championship is expected to arrive in India much sooner. Ron Hogg, Promotions Director for Two Wheels Motor Racing, which holds the rights to ARRC, indicated that a race could be held at BIC as early as July-August 2026. He identified India as a strategically vital market with a passionate fanbase.

Significance of Buddh International Circuit

The Buddh International Circuit remains a central element in the strategy for reviving motorcycle racing. This 5.14-kilometer track has previously accommodated both Formula 1 and MotoGP events, earning accolades from riders for its design and facilities during its inaugural MotoGP race.

Karel Abraham noted that BIC meets the necessary quality standards for international championships and is the top choice for MotoGP’s return to India.

Expertise from Karel Abraham

Abraham’s involvement brings both competitive credibility and operational knowledge, as he has experience in managing high-level racing circuits. His past ownership and management of the Brno Circuit further enhance his ability to execute international events. This partnership extends beyond just hosting races; it aims to develop a long-term ecosystem for nurturing local racing talent and attracting sponsorship and investment at a global level.

Economic Implications of Motorsport Events

Significant events such as MotoGP and ARRC can have a far-reaching economic impact, including boosting tourism, enhancing infrastructure, creating jobs, and fostering investment in motorsport industries. These aspects make the proposed collaboration strategically important for Uttar Pradesh and the broader Indian economy.

Future Prospects

While no specific timeline for MotoGP’s return has been set, officials anticipate that negotiations will commence soon, with the aim of including India back on the championship calendar at the earliest opportunity.

If successful, this collaboration between Uttar Pradesh and AVW Global could pave the way for a revitalized motorcycle racing scene in the country, emphasizing structured growth, international expertise, and long-term planning over short-term gains.
