Gujarat: Teacher Arrested for Raping Class 9 Student in Rajkot

The CSR Journal Magazine

A mathematics teacher from a government school in Rajkot, Gujarat, has been arrested under grave charges for allegedly raping a 14-year-old student. The incident reportedly occurred after the teacher promised the student good grades in mathematics and threatened academic failure if she refused his advances. The alleged abuse began while the victim was still in Class 8 and came to light only after she confided in her mother nearly eight months later.

The accused, identified as Mohit Tank, was teaching at Mother Teresa School No. 88. He was apprehended on Friday, October 2, after the student’s mother formally lodged a complaint at the local Taluka police station.

This case has been filed under stringent provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, which includes severe penalties for rape among other offences. The complaint outlines the traumatic experience of the student and raises significant concerns regarding the conduct of educational professionals.

Details of the Alleged Abuse

The victim attended Mother Teresa School No. 88 from 2023 to 2026 for Classes 6 to 8 before transferring to Bardanwala Kanya Vidyalaya, where she is currently in Class 9. Reports indicate that the student’s mother became aware of her daughter’s distress and unusual behaviour, prompting her to ask the girl about her troubles on September 23. After much hesitation, the young girl disclosed her experiences involving Tank.

According to the complaint, during an incident in January 2026, Tank allegedly called the girl into a school office and insisted they leave together, despite her resistance. He reportedly threatened her, instructing her to inform anyone inquiring about them that he had forgotten a book and was merely escorting her home. The teacher’s intimidation seemingly left the victim with little choice but to comply.

Ongoing Investigation and Wider Implications

After Tank’s arrest, law enforcement is conducting further investigations into the allegations while assessing whether he may have previously targeted other female students during his career, which commenced in 2010. Tank had served at several schools in Rajkot and the Jamnagar district, and had been at Mother Teresa School No. 88 for approximately three years.

The police are focused on gathering additional evidence and corroborating the student’s account of events. Special emphasis is being placed on ensuring the safety and well-being of all students in the educational institution while they review past records of the accused teacher.

The case has garnered significant media attention, raising crucial questions about the safety protocols in schools and the responsibility of educational organisations to protect students from potential abuses by staff. Investigators aim to thoroughly examine any possible risk factors that may have allowed such behaviour to persist unchecked for an extended period.
