Big Relief for UP’s Elderly! Nearly 10 Lakh Seniors Added to Pension List Under Yogi Govt

The CSR Journal Magazine

The National Old Age Pension Scheme in Uttar Pradesh has witnessed significant expansion in 2025, emerging as a major social security initiative for senior citizens under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s leadership. In the last eight months alone, nearly 9.83 lakh newly eligible elderly citizens have been enrolled, taking the total number of beneficiaries across the state to about 67.5 lakh.

Strong Push for Elderly Welfare

Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Social Welfare, Asim Arun, said the government remains committed to ensuring dignity, financial security and self-reliance for senior citizens. He noted that the pension scheme has been continuously refined in line with the Chief Minister’s vision to ensure that assistance reaches only deserving beneficiaries without delays or leakages.

Digital Monitoring Brings Transparency

To enhance efficiency and accountability, the Social Welfare Department has implemented Aadhaar-based authentication, digital verification systems and real-time monitoring. These measures have helped curb fraudulent and ineligible entries while strengthening public trust in the pension distribution process.

In 2024, around 61 lakh elderly citizens were receiving pensions under the scheme. This figure rose to 67.5 lakh in 2025, highlighting the state’s sustained focus on expanding social security coverage through direct benefit transfers to senior citizens’ bank accounts.

Removal of Ineligible Beneficiaries

Regular verification drives were conducted to maintain the scheme’s integrity. As a result, the names of nearly 1.77 lakh deceased or ineligible beneficiaries were removed in 2024, followed by the deletion of about 3.32 lakh such entries in 2025. Officials said this step ensured that government funds were directed solely to genuine beneficiaries.

Deputy Director Amarjeet Singh said the department’s priority is universal coverage for eligible elderly citizens. Under the ‘One Family, One Identity’ initiative, the integration of the Family ID system will enable automatic identification of eligible individuals. Once a citizen turns 60, pension payments will be auto-credited to their bank accounts, ensuring timely and hassle-free access.

With these reforms, the Old Age Pension Scheme continues to strengthen the social safety net for Uttar Pradesh’s elderly population.
