Delivery Worker Dies by Suicide After Assault Over Torn Rs 10 Note

The CSR Journal Magazine

A 24-year-old delivery worker for Flipkart Minutes tragically died after allegedly consuming pesticide, following a dispute with a customer regarding a torn Rs 10 note. Sameer Hussain Saifi, who worked in Kalyanpuri, Delhi, passed away on October 20 after spending 16 days in hospital. Prior to his death, he recorded a video detailing the incident, expressing frustration over police inaction and threatening to take his own life if his complaint was not addressed.

In the video, Sameer recounted that the altercation occurred on October 4 at approximately 11.30 pm while he was delivering an order. He stated that the customer reacted aggressively when he requested a replacement for the torn note, leading to a physical assault. Sameer described being slapped multiple times and feeling humiliated in front of bystanders.

He expressed deep hurt over the customer’s derogatory remarks about his socio-economic status, stating that he worked hard to support himself and his family. Sameer lamented the lack of support from witnesses during the incident, emphasising the emotional toll it took on him.

Concerns Over Police Response and Job Security

Sameer highlighted the challenges faced by delivery workers, who often endure long hours and difficult conditions while trying to make a living. He questioned the protection available to workers like him when confronted with abuse or violence during their duties. His video conveyed a sense of despair regarding the prioritisation of customers over delivery personnel.

In his final message, he expressed disappointment with the police, stating that he felt powerless due to his financial situation. He had approached the authorities after the assault but feared that his complaint would not be taken seriously. Sameer warned in the video that he would consume poison if he did not receive a response within 24 hours, underscoring his desperation.

Following the incident, his uncle, Mohammed Shahid Saifi, reported that Sameer went to the Flipkart office and then to the Kalyanpuri police station with fellow delivery workers to file a complaint. He was subsequently taken to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital, where a medico-legal case was registered.

Family’s Grief and Allegations Against Police

The family has expressed profound sorrow over Sameer’s death, especially as his 25th birthday was approaching on October 22. His uncle articulated the family’s anguish, questioning whether to celebrate or mourn on that day. They have alleged that the police did not adequately respond to Sameer’s complaint and claimed that one of the accused is related to a local BJP councillor. These claims have not been independently verified.

Sameer’s family has demanded a thorough investigation, including a post-mortem examination by a medical board. They have also requested access to CCTV footage from the intensive care unit and detailed medical records of Sameer’s treatment.

In response to the incident, the East Delhi Deputy Commissioner of Police announced that two individuals have been arrested in connection with the case. An FIR was filed on October 5, the same day Sameer approached the police, and the accused were apprehended a week later. The investigation continues as the family seeks justice for Sameer’s tragic death.
