Uttar Pradesh Man Arrested for Killing Mother and Sister Over Land Dispute

The CSR Journal Magazine

On Friday, a family conflict in Jaunpur district, Uttar Pradesh, resulted in the tragic deaths of a mother and daughter. The alleged perpetrator, identified as Bhupendra Patel, is accused of attacking his 70-year-old mother, Sheetla Devi, and her 40-year-old daughter, Gaura Devi. The incident appears to stem from long-standing disputes regarding land ownership and pension payments linked to Sheetla Devi.

According to police reports, the altercation escalated during an argument at the family’s residence in the afternoon on September 18, 2026. Bhupendra reportedly fetched an axe from inside the house and confronted his mother. Tragically, Sheetla Devi succumbed to her injuries on-site. During the confrontation, Gaura Devi attempted to intervene to protect her mother, resulting in her being fatally attacked as well.

The police noted that Bhupendra remained at the residence following the attacks and did not attempt to flee the scene. Officers arrived promptly at the village and detained him. The weapon alleged to have been used during the incident, the axe, was also recovered for evidence.

Background of the Family Dispute

The victims were reportedly preoccupied with property and pension-related disagreements. Bhupendra’s father, Rajpati Patel, a retired teacher, had passed away several years ago. Approximately six years prior to the incident, he had created a will favouring Gaura Devi, complicating the family’s property dynamics. After Rajpati Patel’s death, the property became the source of continued tension, culminating in legal action surrounding land division among the family’s six daughters and Bhupendra.

Family sources revealed that the land was eventually split, with portions allotted to the daughters and the remainder being shared between Sheetla Devi and Bhupendra. Ongoing disputes regarding Sheetla Devi’s pension payments reportedly further exacerbated tensions among family members, leading to this violent confrontation.

Local law enforcement officials have stated that the family’s property disputes contributed to a climate of animosity, which may have driven Bhupendra to commit this act. The police are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the murders to understand better the motivations and dynamics at play in this family tragedy.

Police Response and Investigation

In the aftermath of the incident, police from ten nearby stations were mobilised to the village to ensure public safety and gather additional evidence. Senior officials, including Additional Superintendent of Police (Rural) Atish Kumar Singh, conducted inspections at the crime scene to establish a clearer understanding of the situation.

Authorities have stated that Bhupendra Patel had been harbouring resentment towards his mother and sister for a considerable period, which accounted for his violent actions. ASP Singh confirmed the arrest of Bhupendra and the collection of the murder weapon, marking the beginning of the judicial process to address this alarming case.

The bodies of the victims have been sent for autopsy and further legal procedures, reflecting the seriousness with which authorities are treating this case. As the investigation continues, police are pursuing all possible angles to ensure that justice is served for both Sheetla Devi and Gaura Devi’s tragic demise.
