Jharkhand Man Allegedly Murders Mother and Sister Over Land Dispute

The CSR Journal Magazine

A 68-year-old woman and her 27-year-old daughter were reportedly murdered by a group of 13 individuals, including the woman’s son, due to a land dispute in the West Singhbhum district of Jharkhand. The victims, identified as Kuni Kui and her daughter Namsi Birua, were allegedly killed as part of a conspiracy to take control of their land.

Following the murders, the accused allegedly burnt the bodies using diesel and buried them in a cave located in the Dawaburu hills to eliminate evidence. According to police reports, the conflict began in June 2026 when Kuni Kui and her son Yadunath Birua, also known as Yadu, had a disagreement regarding the cutting of a field boundary. This initial disagreement escalated into a significant family feud, leading to the tragic events that unfolded.

The police allege that around 13 individuals conspired to murder Kuni Kui and Namsi Birua to gain control over their property. Among the accused is Tribhuvan Birua, aged 36, who is Kuni Kui’s son from her first marriage. His involvement has raised serious concerns about familial ties and the lengths to which individuals may go over property disputes. The police have indicated that the conspiracy involved not only family members but also local youths and other villagers.

Discovery of the Bodies

The investigation into the disappearance of Kuni Kui and Namsi Birua began on October 27, when local authorities received reports regarding their absence. A special investigation team was formed to look into the case, employing technical evidence and confidential information to identify potential suspects. This led to the interrogation of several individuals, revealing the involvement of seven people in the double murder.

Following the interrogation, police arrested seven suspects, who were identified as Yadunath Birua alias Yadu, Ladura Birua, Rajaram Birua, Chedre Birua alias Chandra Birua, Mahti Birua, Dui Kodakel alias Lakhan Kodakel, and Tribhuvan Birua. All seven were subsequently presented in court and remanded to judicial custody on Friday. The police are actively pursuing the remaining six individuals implicated in the conspiracy.

During the investigation, police recovered burnt bones from the cave where the bodies were allegedly disposed of. A Circle Officer and a forensic team from Ranchi were involved in the recovery process, employing scientific methods to gather evidence. This recovery has been crucial in substantiating the allegations against the accused and furthering the investigation.

Legal Proceedings and Ongoing Investigation

The case has drawn significant attention due to the shocking nature of the crime and the involvement of family members in the alleged murders. The police have stated that they are conducting raids to apprehend the remaining suspects and are committed to ensuring that justice is served. The investigation continues as authorities work to piece together the events leading up to the tragic incident.

As the legal proceedings unfold, the community remains in shock over the incident. The involvement of family members in such a serious crime raises broader questions about familial relationships and conflicts over property in rural areas. The police are expected to provide further updates as they continue their investigation into this disturbing case.

Authorities have emphasised the importance of addressing land disputes through legal means rather than resorting to violence. The tragic outcome of this case serves as a reminder of the potential consequences of unresolved conflicts and the need for community dialogue.
