Uttar Pradesh Home Department Submits SIT Final Report in Ayodhya Temple Donation Theft Case

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Home Department of the Uttar Pradesh government recently delivered the Special Investigation Team’s (SIT) final report regarding the Ayodhya Ram Temple donation theft case to the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir Teerth Kshetra Trust. This action is part of the ongoing investigation into the alleged misappropriation of donations made to the temple.

Sources indicate that the report has been shared following necessary procedural actions undertaken by the Uttar Pradesh Home Department. This development is crucial in the context of the investigation concerning accusations of theft related to donations collected by the temple.

Composition and Leadership of the SIT

The Uttar Pradesh government had earlier reconstituted the Special Investigation Team that is examining the apparent embezzlement of contributions to the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple. The revised SIT includes three senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officers, among whom the Inspector General Kiran S is the head. Additionally, Deputy Inspector General of Ayodhya Somen Verma and Senior Superintendent of Police Dr Gaurav Grover are part of this team.

The prior SIT consisted of officials such as Lucknow Commissioner Vijay Vishwas Pant and Special Secretary (Finance) Neel Ratan Kumar. The formation of a new SIT indicates a focused approach by the government to address the complexities of the case effectively.

On August 17, indicating further developments, the Supreme Court remarked that the status report presented by the Uttar Pradesh government regarding the SIT’s investigation cannot be disclosed to petitioners or any external individuals at this stage. Nevertheless, it has allowed petitioners and other interested members of the public to submit suggestions, which will be presented to the SIT through the office of the Solicitor General.

Political Implications and Ongoing Arrests

The alleged donation scam, reportedly amounting to several lakhs of rupees, encompasses accusations of systematic theft by employees associated with the temple and bank workers. This situation has led to political scrutiny, with opposition parties calling for accountability from higher authorities regarding the management of donation funds.

The First Information Report (FIR) was filed on June 25 at the Ram Janmabhoomi Police Station based on a complaint from Krishanmohan, a trust member. The complaint outlines allegations that temple staff involved in managing donations conspired to commit theft and misappropriation of funds.

The case is notable not only for its financial implications but also for the heightened political tensions it has generated between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and its opponents. The situation continues to evolve, with the investigation into the alleged misappropriation of donation funds actively progressing.
