Cleric Issues Fatwa Against Actor’s Actions

Bollywood actor Sara Ali Khan’s recent visit to the Kedarnath Temple in Uttarakhand has sparked controversy, as a cleric from Uttar Pradesh has labelled her prayers as a “sin under Sharia law.” The cleric, Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Barelvi, who serves as the national president of the All India Muslim Jamaat, has issued a fatwa against her, asserting that her actions are impermissible according to Islamic teachings.

During her visit last week, Sara was seen queuing for darshan and offering prayers at the shrine. Razvi Barelvi claimed that participating in the rituals of another faith is forbidden under Islamic law, labelling her actions as “haram” and urging her to seek forgiveness. He stated that he had received numerous inquiries from young Muslims regarding her visit, which he deemed inappropriate.

Razvi Barelvi expressed that if Sara willingly engaged in the religious practices of another faith, she had committed a sin and should repent to Allah. His comments have ignited a backlash from the public, who have defended the actor’s right to make personal spiritual choices.

Public Backlash Against Cleric’s Remarks

The cleric’s comments have been met with significant criticism from the public, with many labelling his actions as “religious policing.” Social media users have voiced their disapproval, asserting that an individual’s faith and spiritual practices should remain private matters. One user remarked that no cleric has the authority to dictate personal beliefs through guilt or demands for repentance.

Critics have also questioned the necessity of the fatwa, with one individual asking why Razvi felt compelled to issue an unsolicited religious opinion regarding Sara Ali Khan. This incident is not the first time the actor has faced scrutiny for her visits to Hindu temples, as she has previously been trolled for similar actions.

In November 2021, Sara faced backlash for visiting the Kedarnath Temple, and in June 2023, she defended her choices, emphasising that her visits to religious sites are personal decisions. Her connection to the Kedarnath Temple dates back to the filming of her debut movie, “Kedarnath,” in 2017, which was released in 2018, featuring the late actor Sushant Singh Rajput.

Discussion on Religious Freedom in India

The backlash against the cleric’s fatwa has prompted discussions about religious freedom in India. Many individuals have highlighted that faith is a personal journey and that everyone should have the liberty to visit places of worship without facing societal pressure. A user on social media remarked that India’s strength lies in its diversity and the freedom to practise one’s faith peacefully.

Some commentators have pointed out that the Indian Constitution guarantees freedom of religion, asserting that personal choices regarding faith and worship should not be dictated by anyone, including clerics. They emphasised that the Maulana does not possess the authority to determine who can visit which religious site.

As the debate continues, several individuals have expressed that the cleric’s remarks represent an unnecessary controversy over a trivial issue. The incident has reignited discussions about the intersection of personal belief and societal expectations within the diverse cultural landscape of India.
