US Lawmakers Strongly Condemn Alleged Plot to Attack Hindu Temple in Illinois

The CSR Journal Magazine

The recent alleged plot to attack a Hindu temple in Illinois has drawn strong condemnation from US lawmakers, community leaders, and civil society organisations. Alexandros Paporakis, a 19-year-old resident of Palatine, was arrested on October 11 for reportedly attempting to carry out a mass shooting at a temple located in the Aurora area. Authorities stated that the attack was thwarted when Paporakis’s rifle malfunctioned, prompting him to leave the scene and return home.

Paporakis faced a court appearance on October 14, where he was charged with making a terrorist threat and unlawful possession of weapons. The incident has raised significant concerns regarding the rise of anti-Indian and anti-Hindu sentiment in the United States, prompting calls for action from various political figures.

Indian-American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, who was present at the temple during the attempted attack, expressed his horror at the incident. He emphasised the need for serious attention to the dangers posed by anti-Indian hatred and white supremacy, stating that such threats should not be ignored until they result in tragedy.

Reactions from Lawmakers

Congressman Brad Sherman voiced his outrage over the growing anti-Indian and anti-Hindu sentiment in the country. He described the attempted attack as “the epitome of evil” and underscored the necessity of combating prejudice against minority communities. Sherman further called for enhanced security measures at places of worship to ensure the safety of all faiths.

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer expressed alarm at the incident, labelling it a manifestation of escalating anti-Indian and anti-Hindu rhetoric in America. Schumer reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that individuals can practise their faith without fear of violence, emphasising that bigotry has no place in society.

US Representative Ami Bera echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the incident as a stark reminder of the threats faced by Hindu communities. He stressed that every American should be able to worship peacefully, and called for Congress to take more decisive action against hate-fuelled violence.

Community and International Responses

Congresswoman Suzan DelBene expressed her support for Krishnamoorthi and the broader Indian-American community, stating that no one should live in fear due to their religious beliefs. She commended law enforcement for their swift response in addressing the threat. Additionally, Congressman Shri Thanedar voiced his heartbreak over the attack, urging Congress to combat the alarming rise in anti-Hindu incidents.

Congressman Nick LaLota condemned the alleged plot as “pure evil,” asserting that no individual should fear for their safety based on their faith or background. He reaffirmed the importance of religious liberty as a fundamental American principle and praised those who reported the threat.

In a broader context, the Consul General of Israel in Chicago, Elad Strohmayer, condemned the alleged plot, expressing solidarity with the Hindu community in Illinois. He emphasised that everyone should feel safe while worshipping and called for unity against hatred directed at any community.

The Palatine Police Department Chief William Nord indicated that Paporakis had been planning the attack alone and revealed that he had detailed his intentions in a manifesto. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities seeking to understand the significance of the date chosen for the attack.

South Asians for America also condemned the alleged plot, linking it to a broader pattern of hate directed at South Asian Americans. The organisation urged the US Department of Justice and the FBI to consider federal hate crime and domestic terrorism charges in this case, highlighting the urgent need for protective measures for communities targeted by racial and religious hatred.
