A 10-year-old girl allegedly died by suicide in Uttar Pradesh’s Kannauj district after being reprimanded by a teacher over her untidy uniform, sparking protests by family members and local residents, police said on Sunday.

The incident took place in Rampur area, where the child, a Class 5 student, lived with her family. Her younger sister, who studies in Class 3 at the same school, was also present during the incident earlier in the day.

Reprimanded During Morning Assembly

According to preliminary information, the two sisters were scolded by a woman teacher during a routine uniform inspection held at the morning assembly on Saturday. The teacher allegedly reprimanded them over issues related to personal hygiene and untidy clothing.

After the incident, the girls returned home in distress and narrated the episode to their mother. Shortly thereafter, the elder sister allegedly died by suicide inside the house.

Police said the exact circumstances leading to the incident are being investigated.

Protests Outside School

The incident triggered anger among locals, with family members and residents gathering outside the school premises in protest. Demonstrators laid siege to the school and demanded action against those responsible.

Officials said the situation was brought under control after intervention by authorities. The Block Education Officer and the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) reached the spot to pacify the crowd.

Case Registered, Probe Underway

Based on a complaint filed by the child’s mother, police have registered a case against the teacher allegedly involved, the school principal and two others.

Officials said further investigation is underway to ascertain the sequence of events and fix responsibility.

The incident has raised concerns about student well-being and the manner in which disciplinary practices are carried out in schools.
