The recent coastal cleanup campaign at Juhu Beach in Mumbai was attended by Union Minister Jitendra Singh on September 18, 2026. This initiative coincided with the occasion of International Coastal Cleanup Day, which is observed globally each year on the third Saturday of September. Singh highlighted that India began its engagement with this international event during the years 2021-22.

Speaking to the media, Singh addressed the significance of maintaining cleanliness along India’s extensive coastlines, which stretch between 11,000 to 12,000 kilometres. He noted that multiple states and Union Territories, approximately 12 to 13, are located along these coastal regions, underscoring the importance of public awareness regarding their upkeep.

Singh’s remarks also acknowledged the vital role of community participation in these programs, which aim to promote environmental awareness and responsibility among citizens, making them more cognisant about coastal conservation.

Focus on Ocean Resources and Research

During his speech, Singh referred to the Deep Ocean Mission launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which aims to explore the various resources found in oceans, including metals, minerals, fisheries, and medicinal products. This initiative, he stated, is essential for understanding how these resources can be utilised for the benefit of humanity.

Singh elaborated that the mission not only involves scientific research but also emphasizes practical applications of ocean resources. By uncovering the hidden treasures beneath the ocean, the government hopes to provide benefits that can enhance human life and contribute to sustainable practices.

Efforts to protect marine environments are seen as crucial, and the minister called for a collective commitment to keeping oceanic waters and beaches clean. The need for greater public awareness was a recurring theme in his statements, stressing the importance of community involvement in these efforts.

Celebrity Participation and Growth of a Mass Movement

Singh noted the growing participation of various public figures and celebrities in the coastal cleanup campaign since its inception five years ago. He mentioned that an array of ministers, chief ministers, governors, and celebrities have taken part, which has contributed to evolving this initiative into a significant movement across the nation. Notably, celebrities and cricketers joined in the cleanup efforts at Juhu Beach on this occasion.

He underlined the inclusive nature of the campaign, emphasising that individuals from different walks of life have come together to support a common cause. This heightened visibility fosters a sense of community and shared responsibility towards environmental stewardship.

As the Union Minister mentioned, the event serves as an important reminder as International Coastal Cleanup Day approaches. The campaign aims to mobilise citizens to engage actively in preserving coastal areas while recognising the lasting impact such collective actions can have on the environment.
