UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres in Delhi for AI Impact Summit

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has arrived in Delhi to participate in the India-AI Impact Summit. The Ministry of External Affairs’ Official Spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, remarked that Guterres’s visit holds significance for amplifying India’s collaboration with the United Nations. In a message shared on X, Jaiswal extended a warm welcome to Guterres, noting that he was received by Harsh Malhotra, Minister of State for Corporate Affairs, and Transport & Highways.

AI for Inclusivity and Development

The United Nations emphasizes the role of artificial intelligence in fostering inclusivity. As indicated on its website, AI encompasses a variety of technologies characterized as ‘self-learning, adaptive systems.’ This technology can be classified based on specific purposes such as facial and image recognition, as well as functionalities that include language comprehension and problem-solving capabilities. It incorporates a range of methods and disciplines, including vision, speech recognition, and robotics, thereby enhancing various traditional human capabilities. Recent advancements in AI have been significantly fueled by improvements in computer processing power and innovative data techniques.

AI’s Role in Achieving Sustainable Development Goals

Artificial intelligence holds considerable potential to assist the UN in numerous areas, including promoting inclusivity and mitigating inequalities. It is estimated that AI could help accelerate nearly 80% of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), thereby reinforcing the United Nations’ overall mission.

Global Leaders Gather for the Summit

The India-AI Impact Summit, currently underway in New Delhi, has attracted global leaders. Earlier today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held several bilateral discussions on the summit’s sidelines. Attendees included Croatia’s Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic, Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, Finland’s Prime Minister Petteri Orpo, and Spain’s President Pedro Sanchez. Other notable arrivals include Seychelles’ Vice President Sebastien Pillay, Mauritius’ Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam, and Ebba Busch, Sweden’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Energy, Business, and Industry.

The India AI Impact Summit 2026 commenced on February 16 at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi and will continue until February 20, 2026. The event aims to bring together government policymakers, industry experts in AI, academics, technology innovators, and representatives from civil society to engage in global discussions around artificial intelligence and its implications.
