A six-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted in northeast Delhi’s Bhajanpura area last week, leading to the apprehension of two juvenile boys, police officials confirmed on Tuesday. The incident occurred on January 18, while the arrests were made a day later. A third minor accused in the case has not yet been traced.
The child had stepped out of her home to run a small errand when three boys allegedly lured her away, according to police findings. The family grew alarmed when the girl returned home in a critical condition, prompting immediate action.
The child’s mother recounted the moment she realised the gravity of the situation while speaking to the media. “She fell unconscious after that…I took her to the police station and they got her help,” she said.
Accused Neighbours Allegedly Coerced Girl to Hide Assault
The parents stated that the accused boys were neighbours and were familiar to the family. The mother further alleged that the girl was attacked close to home and was later told to hide the truth. “My daughter was not very far from the house when it happened. When she was let go, she told us that the boys instructed her to tell us that she fell from an auto,” she claimed.
Police said a case was registered after the family approached them, invoking relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The victim was sent for a medical examination and is currently undergoing treatment, counselling, and follow-up care.
“All the accused are minors and have been identified. Two juveniles have been apprehended and produced before the Juvenile Justice Board. Efforts are underway to trace the third,” a police officer said.
Two Minors Produced Before Juvenile Justice Board
The two detained minors were presented before the Juvenile Justice Board in accordance with juvenile justice procedures. Officials confirmed that the child’s statement has been recorded and that legal formalities are being carried out as mandated in cases involving minors.
Meanwhile, the victim’s mother alleged that the remaining accused may have fled the city. She claimed the boy could be hiding in his native village in Bihar and added that the two apprehended juveniles were handed over to police by their own parents.
Police teams have been deployed to track down the absconding minor. Investigators are examining CCTV footage from nearby lanes and relying on local intelligence inputs as the search continues. Authorities said the investigation remains active.
