Two Girl Athletes Found Hanging at Sports Authority of India Hostel, Kerala

The CSR Journal Magazine

Two girl sports trainees staying at a hostel run by the Sports Authority of India in Kerala were found hanging in a room on Thursday, police said.

The deceased have been identified as Sandra, 17, a native of Kozhikode district, and Vyshnavi, 15, from Thiruvananthapuram district. Both were minors and were undergoing residential sports training at the SAI hostel.

Sandra was an athletics trainee and a Plus Two student, while Vyshnavi was a kabaddi player studying in Class 10, police said.

Incident Noticed During Morning Training Hours

The incident came to light around 5 am when fellow hostel inmates noticed that the two girls had not reported for their scheduled morning training session. After repeated knocks on the door of Sandra’s room went unanswered, hostel authorities broke open the door.

Both girls were found hanging from ceiling fans inside the room, police said. Emergency services were alerted, but they were declared dead at the scene. The bodies were later shifted to a government hospital for post-mortem examinations.

Police said Vyshnavi was staying in a different room at the hostel but had spent Wednesday night in Sandra’s room. Both were reportedly seen by other inmates early in the morning, shortly before the incident was discovered.

Police Launch Investigation, No Note Recovered

The Kollam East police have registered a case of unnatural death and launched an investigation. Officials said the reason for the deaths is yet to be ascertained.

“No suicide note has been recovered from the room,” police officials said, adding that all aspects are being examined as part of the probe.

Statements will be recorded from other sportspersons staying at the hostel, trainers, hostel staff and relatives of the deceased, an official said.

Bodies to be Handed Over after Post-Mortem

The bodies of Sandra and Vyshnavi will be handed over to their families after the post-mortem examinations are completed, police said.

Officials from the Sports Authority of India have been informed of the incident. Further action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
