Trump’s Threats Lead to Suspension of Quadrilateral Talks, Says Iranian FM Spokesperson

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Esmail Baghaei, announced that threats made by US President Donald Trump resulted in the suspension of a quadrilateral meeting involving the US, Iran, Qatar, and Pakistan. This meeting took place in Burgenstock, Switzerland, and was focused on a memorandum of understanding (MoU) comprising fourteen points. Despite ongoing discussions about topics such as Iranian oil sales and the release of frozen assets, the talks were halted due to the heightened tensions stemming from Trump’s comments.

According to reports from Iranian state media, Baghaei confirmed that while discussions were progressing on technical issues, Trump’s warning against Iran escalated the situation. He cited Trump’s remarks regarding Iran’s support of proxy groups, particularly in Lebanon, as a significant factor leading to Iran’s decision to withdraw from the quadrilateral format of negotiations.

Baghaei emphasised the necessity of a peaceful resolution, stating, “The war on all fronts, including Lebanon, must end.” He also noted that there had been progress on discussions regarding the issuance of licenses for oil sales and the release of Iranian financial assets.

Focus on Oil Sales and Maritime Security

The discussions reportedly covered important topics concerning the issuance of necessary permissions for the sale of Iranian oil and the release of its frozen assets. Baghaei conveyed that notable advancements were made in both areas during the talks. He pointed out the significance of these elements as crucial for moving forward with final negotiations.

Another key topic of discussion was the establishment of mechanisms for safe maritime passage through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. Baghaei underscored this issue as paramount, given its impact on regional stability and economic interests.

Despite the disruptions, Baghaei reiterated Iran’s commitment to continued diplomatic efforts. He mentioned that prior to the suspension, extensive discussions had been held beginning Sunday morning. The climate changed dramatically with the release of the US’s threatening statement, prompting Iran to withdraw from the negotiations.

Reactions to Trump’s Remarks

The Iranian Parliament Speaker, MB Ghalibaf, reacted strongly to Trump’s comments, labelling them as indicative of American desperation. He dismissed the US President’s threats as ineffective, reinforcing Iran’s stance on sovereignty and resilience against external pressures.

Ghalibaf, who serves as the chief negotiator from the Iranian side, published a statement asserting that Iran would not be coerced by threats. He stated that Iran’s armed forces are fully prepared to respond if required, reinforcing the nation’s commitment to its regional policies.

Efforts from Qatar and Pakistan to keep the quadrilateral talks alive were met with resistance from Iran, which removed itself from the four-party format. Baghaei clarified that Iran’s decision was based on the need for accountability and adherence to commitments, especially given concerns surrounding compliance and alleged ceasefire violations.

Looking ahead, Baghaei indicated that although the negotiations’ current phase was concluded, the technical teams would reconvene shortly. He noted that the mediators, Qatar and Pakistan, would compile a document summarising agreements made during an extensive 18-hour discussion. Baghaei affirmed that issues related to oil sales and asset releases are critical components that must be addressed to progress towards a comprehensive agreement based on the MoU.
