Yemen’s President Rashad al-Alimi recently solicited assistance from US President Donald Trump regarding the ongoing conflict with the Iran-backed Houthi movement. Reports indicate that Trump, during a phone conversation with Alimi, avoided making any military commitments to support Yemen’s government. This call, which took place on Sunday, aimed to reaffirm solidarity with Yemen’s government, which has been under mounting pressure due to Houthi advances.

Alimi, who leads Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council, received backing from Saudi Arabia in his appeal for US intervention. His request followed a significant escalation in hostilities, marked by a recent Houthi attack on Riyadh, underscoring the urgency of the situation in Yemen. The Houthis have gained control over considerable portions of Yemen’s coastline along the Red Sea, raising alarms within the Saudi leadership.

Saudi Arabia Urges Action From Trump

Amid the ongoing conflict, Saudi pressure has been directed towards Trump to adopt a firmer stance against Houthi advances. According to a report from the New York Times, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman also communicated with Trump on the same day, advocating for US action against the Houthis. It has been reported that Trump has fluctuated in his position regarding potential US military engagement with the group.

The New York Times detailed that Trump had previously opposed military strikes against the Houthis but changed his stance to consider airstrikes, instructing the Pentagon to prepare for possible operations. However, as preparations reached advanced stages, including the development of target lists and readiness checks for US aircraft, Trump allegedly reverted to his initial position, opting against an immediate military response.

Investigations by various outlets, including Axios, noted that Trump had declined a prior Saudi request for similar military action. Fox News also reported that Trump indicated the Houthis had purportedly committed to refraining from assaults on US interests.

Houthi Control and Regional Implications

The Houthis have expanded their influence over critical coastal territories, particularly near the Bab al-Mandab Strait, a crucial maritime route linking the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden. This territorial gain is heightening concerns within Saudi Arabia regarding the protection of its borders and the security of maritime trade routes that could be jeopardised by Houthi activities.
