Trinamool MP and lawyer Kalyan Banerjee from Serampore has lost Rs 55 lakh after falling into the trap of cyber fraudsters. The MP alleged that around Rs 55 lakh had mysteriously disappeared from his bank account. The matter has created a stir in the political circles.

According to reports, an account was opened in the name of Kalyan Banerjee in the Assembly Sub-branch of State Bank of India (SBI) between 2001 and 2006 when he was the MLA from Asansol South. The account was in a ‘dormant’ state due to lack of transactions for a long time. Recently, fraudsters have used that inactive account to siphon off a huge amount of money, Banerjee alleged.

How scammers accessed MP Kalyan Banerjee’s account

A complaint has been lodged with the Cyber Crime department of Kolkata Police by the bank authorities. After investigation, the police came to know that Rs 55 lakh was first transferred from the MP’s main account in the Kalighat branch to that dormant account by forging his photo and mobile number. Later, the entire amount was withdrawn from there by unknown fraudsters.

The MP from Serampore has expressed disappointment with the news of the fraud and also took a jibe at the ruling BJP government at the centre. He said, “If you keep money in the bank, cyber criminals will take it, and if you keep money at home, Narendra Modi will take it.”

Kolkata Police’s Cyber Crime Department investigating

The Cyber Crime department of Kolkata Police has started an investigation. A senior Kolkata Police officer, who did not wish to be named, said, “The matter is being investigated thoroughly. In addition, the bank officials are also being contacted.”

The police also said that a search is underway to find the main perpetrators of the fraud. On the other hand, the bank is also investigating whether there is any flaw in the basic security. According to sources close to MP Kalyan Banerjee, he has expressed hope that the mystery of this cyber fraud will be solved soon and his money will also be recovered.

Police will take the statement of MP Kalyan Banerjee during the investigation of this incident. Along with this, the officials of the concerned bank will also be contacted.
