“Throw away corrupt government of Himanta Biswa Sarma”: Gaurav Gogoi ahead of Assam Assembly Elections

The CSR Journal Magazine

Gaurav Gogoi, the President of the Assam Congress, expressed optimism regarding the upcoming Assembly elections, scheduled for April 9, 2026. Following the Election Commission of India’s announcement of the election timetable, Gogoi declared his confidence in the electorate’s ability to remove the current BJP-led government, headed by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. He emphasized that a Congress-led administration would pave the way for a “new Assam,” focusing on development and the safeguarding of fundamental rights.

Details of Upcoming Elections

The Election Commission disclosed that all 126 Assembly constituencies in Assam would hold elections in a single phase. Vote counting is set for May 4. The Model Code of Conduct has been activated immediately in all election-bound areas. This upcoming election is poised to be a significant contest between the ruling BJP-led NDA coalition and the Congress party.

Incumbent Government’s Campaign Strategies

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s BJP aims to secure a third consecutive term in office. In preparation for the elections, the state BJP has initiated the “Jan Ashirwad Yatra,” which aims to foster direct interaction with the people of Assam. CM Sarma, who has actively participated in this outreach program, mentioned that he has already traveled 1,200 kilometers and spent about 14 hours daily meeting constituents.

Congress Party’s Candidate List

In response to the forthcoming elections, the Congress party recently announced its second list of candidates, which includes 23 names, bringing its total nominations to 65 out of the 126 Assembly seats. The party indicated that 15 constituencies would be reserved for its alliance partners, including areas such as Bhowanipur-Sorbhoog, Bajali, Palasbari, Guwahati Central, Goreswar, Morigaon, and Barhampur.

Previous Election Performance

In the 2021 Assembly elections, the NDA coalition, which includes the BJP, AGP, and the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), secured 75 seats, with the BJP contributing the majority at 60 seats. Voter turnout that year was recorded at 86.2 percent, with over 22 million registered voters participating. The BJP showed a strong performance in the 2016 elections as well, winning 60 seats, while the Congress earned 26 seats, and the AIDUF won 13 seats, with a voter turnout of 83.9 percent where approximately 19,947,690 voters cast their ballots.
