“Those Who Levelled Allegations Are Running Away”: Assam CM Sarma Slams Pawan Khera Over Passport Row

The CSR Journal Magazine

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has responded to accusations made by Congress leader Pawan Khera regarding the Sarma family’s alleged possession of multiple passports and foreign assets. Speaking in Golaghat, Sarma asserted that Khera, who has levied these claims, was now “running away” from the situation. Sarma contended that the documentation used to support Khera’s allegations were, in fact, duplicates.

During a press briefing, Sarma stated, “Those who levelled allegations are now running away.” He claimed that governments from three states had verified that the documents in question were not authentic. This response marks a significant escalation in an already heated political discourse.

Sarma further asserted that there might be a larger conspiracy at play, alleging that Khera may have received the documents from Rahul Gandhi. This assertion adds another layer to the ongoing tensions between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress party in Assam.

Political Fallout and Reactions

In reaction to the unfolding drama, Sarma was dismissive of comments made by Akhil Gogoi, the president of Raijor Dal, regarding police actions concerning Khera. Sarma referred to Gogoi as a “kid” and emphasised the need to catch “the big fish,” indicating he believes there are more serious concerns at play beyond Khera’s allegations.

The backdrop of these exchanges is the upcoming Assam Assembly elections, scheduled for April 9. Sarma expressed his assurance in the National Democratic Alliance’s performance, predicting that they would secure between 90 and 100 seats, with the BJP expected to take over 70 of those. This confidence appears to be a strategic move in light of the political climate as the elections approach.

Khera’s accusations detailed that Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, the Chief Minister’s wife, allegedly possesses passports from India, the UAE, and Egypt, alongside luxury properties in Dubai and a company registered in Wyoming, USA. The Sarma family has categorically denied these claims and labelled the documents alleged by Khera as “AI-generated fabrications” propagated by Pakistani social media entities.

Police Actions and Further Developments

In a developing situation, police conduct searched Khera’s residence in Delhi. Debajit Nath, Deputy Commissioner of Police in Assam, confirmed that they had carried out the search but refrained from providing specific details. Khera’s subsequent absence has prompted Sarma to claim that Khera had fled to Hyderabad after the police raid.

Sarma remarked, “I have come to know through the media that the police have gone to his residence in Delhi, but he has run away to Hyderabad. The law will take its own course.” This highlights the ongoing challenges in addressing the allegations while maintaining law enforcement protocols.

As both sides engage in a war of words, the outcomes of these developments remain uncertain. The upcoming elections will not only serve as a platform for the parties involved but will also dictate the political landscape in Assam. Political analysts will be closely observing the impacts of these allegations as the voting day approaches.
