On September 5, numerous injuries were reported during the Dahi Handi celebrations held in Mumbai. According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), a total of 32 individuals sustained injuries throughout the festivities. The official statement detailed that 28 of the injured have since been discharged from medical facilities, while four individuals are still receiving treatment.

The majority of injuries originated from civic hospitals, where 29 individuals were documented as being hurt. Among these, four individuals continue to be monitored, and 25 have been successfully released from care. The events took place amidst a backdrop of celebration, reflecting the community spirit associated with Dahi Handi.

Tragic Incident Involving a Young Boy

Amidst the festivities, a tragic event occurred in Malad West where a seven-year-old boy lost his life when a brick column reportedly collapsed. The incident transpired at the Ekta Welfare Society located on Marve Road around 3 pm during a local Dahi Handi celebration involving children. It was reported that a rope was tied between a tree and the column, which was part of a ground-floor structure.

The collapse caused a severe head injury to the boy, who was identified as Rudra Kadam. Following the incident, he was promptly transported to Malvani General Hospital; however, medical personnel declared him dead upon arrival. Local ward staff and police teams were mobilised to address the situation, and further inquiries into the incident are currently underway.

Officials reiterated the importance of safety measures during such celebratory activities, especially when children are involved, in the wake of this tragic loss. They are expected to conduct an investigation to assess the circumstances leading up to the incident.

Fatal Misfortune in Pune

In a separate incident, another fatality was reported following a Dahi Handi celebration in Pune’s Old Sangvi area. Police confirmed that a 45-year-old woman died after a portion of an iron structure erected for the event collapsed. This unfortunate occurrence happened on the night of September 4, after the celebrations had concluded.

The woman was present with her husband as workers began dismantling the iron arch structure when a rod reportedly fell and struck her. She suffered critical injuries and was immediately taken to a nearby medical facility. Despite best efforts, doctors pronounced her dead shortly after arrival.

Authorities are probing the specific circumstances surrounding the incident, focusing on the safety protocols that were in place during the dismantling of the structure. The investigation aims to uncover whether negligence or oversight contributed to this tragic occurrence.
