Thirteen Stations in Delhi Under Amrit Bharat Scheme: Key Developments

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Government of India is progressing with the modernization of railway infrastructure through the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. A total of thirteen stations in Delhi have been earmarked for redevelopment, as announced by Ashwini Vaishnaw in Parliament. This initiative is part of a larger strategy by Indian Railways to enhance stations in multiple phases, aiming to elevate passenger amenities, improve connectivity, and enhance the overall experience at these facilities.

Nationwide and Local Station Identification

The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme encompasses a total of 1,338 stations across the nation, with thirteen identified for significant upgrades in Delhi. The stations set for redevelopment include:

1. Adarsh Nagar Delhi

2. Anand Vihar

3. Bijwasan

4. Delhi

5. Delhi Cantt

6. Delhi Sarai Rohilla

7. Delhi Shahdara

8. Hazrat Nizamuddin

9. Narela

10. New Delhi

11. Sabzi Mandi

12. Safdarjung

13. Tilak Bridge

Current Progress at Major Stations

Significant advancements have been reported at several key stations. At Safdarjung Station, construction of the station building is complete, and the signal and telecom building is operational. Improvements in platform shelters and road access are also currently underway.

Bijwasan Station has seen the structural work for the station and concourse finalized, and finishing touches are being applied alongside ongoing platform upgrades. At Delhi Cantt Station, partial completion of station buildings and residential quarters has been achieved, with further work ongoing on elevated roads and concourse improvements.

At New Delhi Station, the construction of the Ajmeri Gate holding area has concluded, while work on a double basement and elevated road on the Paharganj side is actively in progress.

Expected Changes for Passengers

Passengers can anticipate several enhancements under the redevelopment initiative. Key improvements include better accessibility with wider roads and enhanced entry and exit points. Increased passenger comfort is being prioritized with the addition of waiting halls, improved seating, and clean restroom facilities. Connectivity enhancements are also part of the plan, integrating the stations more effectively with city transport networks.

The infrastructure will feature modern amenities such as foot over bridges, air concourses, and various accessibility options like lifts, escalators, and ramps. Retail offerings will be improved through the introduction of ‘One Station One Product’ kiosks.

Additionally, the scheme aims to incorporate sustainable solutions, particularly focusing on eco-friendly practices and modern tracks.

Focus on Inclusive Infrastructure

The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme places a strong emphasis on inclusivity, ensuring facilities are available for Divyangjan passengers. Improvements targeted at enhancing parking and circulation areas, as well as better passenger information systems, are being developed alongside the creation of city-centre-like spaces around stations.

Challenges and Project Timeline

Although there has been noticeable progress, railway authorities highlight the complexities involved in redevelopment. Factors such as safety regulations, utility relocations, operational constraints including the need to maintain train services during construction, and the requirement for multiple clearances (fire, heritage, environment) have posed challenges. As a result, no fixed deadline for project completion has been established.

The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme is a significant initiative aimed at transforming Delhi’s railway landscape, as ongoing developments continue to illustrate the long-term commitment toward modernizing these critical transit hubs.
