Thirteen Lives Lost, Eleven Hospitalised Due to Contaminated Milk in Andhra Pradesh

The CSR Journal Magazine

Thirteen individuals have tragically died and eleven others have been hospitalized in East Godavari district, Andhra Pradesh, following the consumption of allegedly contaminated milk. This series of health crises first emerged on February 22, when a number of elderly residents exhibited severe symptoms including anuria, vomiting, abdominal pain, and acute renal failure that necessitated dialysis. Authorities noted that these individuals required immediate medical attention and were swiftly transported to healthcare facilities.

Medical Findings and Response Actions

According to officials, the death toll related to milk adulteration incidents in the region has reached 13, with seven patients currently receiving treatment in hospitals located in Rajamahendravaram. Following the alarming reports, health officials dispatched milk samples for thorough analysis. Initial epidemiological assessments indicate a strong likelihood of milk adulteration as a significant contributor to the health issues experienced, prompting a multi-departmental response to manage the crisis.

Medical evaluations conducted on the affected individuals revealed heightened levels of blood urea and serum creatinine, which strongly suggest toxic exposure. Preliminary inquiries have pointed to milk consumption as the primary channel of this exposure. Reports indicate that Varalakshmi Milk Dairy supplied the contaminated milk to approximately 106 families in a village in the Korukonda mandal area. In response to the emerging health crisis, the supply of milk was promptly suspended.

Emergency Measures and Investigations

Emergency medical camps have been established in the impacted regions, with healthcare professionals and ambulance services available around the clock. Rapid Response Teams, which consist of district surveillance officers, physicians, microbiologists, pediatricians, forensic specialists, epidemiologists, and nephrologists, have been organized to effectively manage the situation. The Food Safety Department has conducted inspections of the dairy facility implicated in the incident and collected samples of milk, paneer, ghee, drinking water, and vinegar for further examination and enforcement measures.

The suspected milk supplier, 33-year-old Addala Ganeswararao from Narasapuram village, is in custody, and the dairy facility associated with the milk supply has been sealed to prevent further distribution.

Preventive Measures in Neighboring Telangana

In a proactive response, the neighboring state of Telangana has initiated a statewide anti-adulteration campaign aimed at ensuring the safety of milk products, sweets, and snacks available to consumers. Food safety teams conducted inspections between March 2 and March 4 across various establishments, particularly those dealing in rapidly consumed milk products and sweets during the festival season. During this initiative, officials examined 140 food establishments and collected 221 food samples for laboratory testing.

As part of these inspections, 12 unsafe food items were identified and disposed of, alongside eight seizures of non-compliant products. The Food Safety Department emphasized that regulatory measures are being taken against businesses failing to adhere to food safety standards. This initiative has been undertaken to preemptively combat food adulteration and to facilitate a safe celebration period for the public.
