13 Cities, 400 Volunteers: The WE Foundation and Grant Thornton Partner to Combat Urban Waste on National Cleanliness Day

The CSR Journal Magazine

To commemorate National Cleanliness Day, The WE Foundation (TWF), a leading non-profit dedicated to creating inclusive societies, has announced a strategic partnership with Grant Thornton to execute a comprehensive Pan-India Cleanliness Drive. This initiative mobilizes corporate professionals to take direct action in waste management and community sensitization across 13 major locations across the country.

The drive is designed as a high-impact employee volunteering engagement, transitioning corporate social responsibility from financial contribution to boots-on-the-ground action. Approximately 30 Grant Thornton employees per location will lead cleanup efforts, focusing on critical urban areas including Sector 57 in Gurgaon, Jhilmil Colony in Delhi, and Shanthi Colony in Bangalore.

“Our objective is to create a sense of ownership within the community and among corporate citizens,” said Nabanita Banerjee, Director of The WE Foundation. “Just as our flagship ‘Smart Schools’ program ensures no child is left behind digitally, this initiative ensures that our environment is not left behind in our pursuit of progress. By partnering with Grant Thornton, we are integrating professional expertise with grassroots environmental action.”

“At Grant Thornton, we believe that sustainable growth is only possible when we take active responsibility for the ecosystems we inhabit,” said Satya Jha, Partner, CBO, CSO, and CSR Lead National Management at Grant Thornton. “This Pan-India drive is a testament to our commitment to ‘Vibrant India.’ By engaging our people directly on the ground this National Cleanliness Day, we are moving beyond compliance to create a tangible, positive impact in the communities where we operate.”

The one-day event focuses on two core pillars:

Intensive Cleaning: Physical removal of waste from public spaces and sensitive ecological zones like Dadar Beach.

Community Awareness: Engaging with the public to foster long-term behavioral changes regarding urban sanitation.

This initiative reflects The WE Foundation’s proven model of multi-stakeholder collaboration, building on its track record of successful partnerships with state governments in Odisha, Assam, and Maharashtra, corporate giants, and renowned international bodies. By aligning this drive on National Cleanliness Day, The WE Foundation and Grant Thornton Bharat aim to underscore the pivotal role of corporate volunteering in advancing India’s national sanitation and sustainability goals.

The WE Foundation serves as a strategic catalyst, bringing together corporate leaders, international organizations, and governing bodies to amplify the voices of underserved communities. Through its comprehensive corporate programs, the organization has transformed over 100 communities and schools, equipping them with the educational tools and sustainable practices necessary to thrive, ultimately securing a more resilient future for the next generation.

The mission of the non-profit organisation is to bring individuals, organizations, and technology together to build resilient communities and sustainable families, and systems to alleviate poverty and save lives from climate change through the development and replication of reliable, cost-effective, and technology-based solutions.
