Thane Shocker: Man Loses Leg After Robber Snatches Phone, Pushes Him Off Moving Train

The CSR Journal Magazine

Mumbai’s suburban railway network is once again under the scanner following a disturbing incident in which a 30-year-old commuter lost his leg after being pushed out of a moving local train during a mobile phone snatching attempt. The shocking episode occurred late at night on a Badlapur fast local train, highlighting serious concerns over passenger safety.

Robbery Attempt Ends in Life-Altering Accident

The victim, identified as Ritesh Rakesh Yerunkar, was travelling home after work on January 18, 2026. A resident of Badlapur East, Ritesh works at a clothing store in a private mall in Thane. According to officials, he boarded the first luggage compartment of a Badlapur-bound fast local from Thane station around 11:05 pm, as part of his daily commute.

Nearly 40 minutes into the journey, as the train was departing from platform number 1 at Ambernath station around 11:45 pm, a man seated near him suddenly snatched his mobile phone. When Ritesh tried to resist and retrieve his phone, the accused allegedly pushed him forcefully towards the door of the moving train.

Severe Injuries and Emergency Medical Response

The push caused Ritesh to lose balance and fall onto the tracks. His left leg came under the wheels of the train and was crushed, leading to amputation near the knee. He also sustained serious injuries, including a severe head wound, a deep injury to his left cheek, and swelling around one eye.

Railway police personnel present at the station immediately rushed him to Ulhasnagar Central Hospital, from where he was referred to Mumbai’s KEM Hospital due to his critical condition. Doctors at KEM amputated his leg and admitted him to the surgical emergency ward, where he continues to battle for his life.

Accused Arrested, Safety Concerns Resurface

The Kalyan Government Railway Police (GRP) arrested the accused, identified as Kailash Balkrishna Jadhav, and registered a case under relevant sections of law. Further investigation is ongoing.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage among commuters, who are questioning the effectiveness of security measures, night patrols, and CCTV surveillance on suburban trains. Many have demanded urgent action from railway authorities to prevent such crimes and ensure safer travel, especially during late-night hours.
