Tehseen Poonawalla Detained Ahead of E20 Protest, Offers Police Sugarcane Juice

The CSR Journal Magazine

Tehseen Poonawalla, an activist, alleges that he was placed under house arrest by the Delhi Police when he attempted to leave his home to protest against rising sugar prices and the Centre’s E20 fuel policy. He asserts that policies relating to sugar benefit a select group of people while ordinary consumers face increased costs. His protest targeted what he referred to as a “sugar scam,” contending that only politically connected individuals gain from these changes.

Footage shared by Poonawalla on social media platform X reportedly shows him interrogating officers about his confinement and questioning why he was being disallowed from proceeding to Jantar Mantar, the protest site. The police informed him that his request had been “cancelled,” insisting that allowing him to leave could disrupt public order due to the potential influx of supporters.

The police further noted their concern that “some wrong people” might join the protest, prompting Poonawalla to challenge the legitimacy of such reasoning for his containment. In remarks to India Today Digital, he stated that his advocacy group, Team Bharat, intended to “peacefully protest” against the escalating prices of sugar.

Concerns Over Ethanol and Sugar Policies

Poonawalla expressed his belief that the government’s ethanol-blending policy could damage vehicles and decrease overall public welfare. In his discussions with India Today Digital, he connected the protest against the E20 policy with the ongoing struggles regarding rising sugar prices. He indicated that these issues significantly impact households, straining budgets and forcing difficult financial decisions.

He pointedly remarked that the government seems unwilling to allow protests against these issues, suggesting that such demonstrations could threaten the financial interests of politically connected families. Poonawalla described the situation as a “bitter scam” that reflects poorly on the current administration.

As tension escalated, Poonawalla recorded videos showing the police at his residence, wherein he offered them sugarcane juice—a gesture he described as a critique of rising prices associated with sugar and ethanol. The audacity of suggesting that common citizens might soon face higher costs for basic commodities drew attention on social media.

Previous Confrontations with Authorities

This current incident of Poonawalla’s detention follows a similar episode just weeks earlier, during which he clashed with the Delhi Police over another protest he had planned to express his dissent regarding the E20 fuel policy. Previously, on July 31, he had intended to initiate a solitary march to raise awareness of the concerns surrounding the blending of petrol with ethanol.

His prior march was allegedly thwarted by the police, leading him to announce a day-long hunger strike. Poonawalla has persistently voiced his opposition to the government’s E20 fuel policy and has extended his critique to encompass the broader implications of sugar and ethanol policies, labelling them as part of an ongoing “Sugar Scam” and “Ethanol Scam.”

In his public statements, he has repeatedly argued that these policies disproportionately favour politically influential families while imposing a heavier financial burden on everyday consumers. Poonawalla’s ongoing advocacy highlights the friction between public sentiment and governmental policy as he continues to seek avenues for legitimate protest.
