Russia has made a renewed proposal to India concerning an advanced engine intended for the Indian Air Force’s Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter jets. This announcement was made during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to New Delhi for the BRICS summit. The proposed engine, designated as the Izdeliye 177S, is suggested as a potential alternative to the existing AL-31F/FP engines currently powering the Su-30MKI fleet.

The 177S engine is reported to deliver considerable performance enhancements while maintaining similar dimensions and weight to the current powerplants. It is said to produce up to 14.5 tonnes of thrust, providing a beneficial upgrade without necessitating significant redesigns to the fighter jets themselves, according to sources.

Additionally, the Izdeliye 177S engine is being marketed as possessing improved efficiency and a longer service life. It is alleged to have an operational life of up to 6,000 hours, alongside a reported 7 per cent reduction in fuel consumption across various modes of operation. These features align with Russia’s strategy to position the engine as a transformative upgrade for India’s Su-30MKI aircraft.

Economic and Operational Considerations

While the engine proposal presents an opportunity for enhanced military capability, it also underscores the importance of the existing industrial relationship between India and Russia. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) currently manufactures and oversees the maintenance of the AL-31FP engines under licence. This established partnership could facilitate greater domestic involvement in the potential production and integration of the next-generation engine.

However, the adoption of the proposed engine is not guaranteed. India continues to weigh several factors, including cost and operational implications. The economic feasibility of integrating a new engine into an established air fleet raises practical concerns regarding funding and logistics, which will play a crucial role in any eventual decision-making process.

The engine proposal also occurs amid ongoing discussions between India and Russia concerning the Su-57E, the export variant of Russia’s fifth-generation fighter. These discussions might weave into a larger discourse related to fighter-engine technology and aerospace collaboration between the two nations.

Strengthening Indo-Russian Relations at BRICS

The proposed engine for the Su-30MKI is situated within the broader context of the Indo-Russian strategic partnership, which has been further solidified during President Putin’s visit. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Putin agreed to enhance their countries’ Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership, with a focus on defence and technology cooperation.

The two leaders also deliberated on expanding bilateral trade and collaboration across various sectors, with a shared objective of increasing annual trade to $100 billion by the year 2030. This joint commitment serves to reinforce the significance of their relationship, even as discussions on military and aerospace cooperation continue to evolve.

Consequently, the proposal for an updated engine system adds a substantial defence component to President Putin’s agenda at the BRICS summit. Moscow’s outreach to India regarding broader military collaboration, including the Su-57E fighter, emphasises the enduring significance of the defence sector in the context of the Indo-Russian partnership.
