Festive joy has swept across the sprawling tea gardens of North Bengal following the announcement of a 20% festival bonus for plantation workers ahead of Durga Puja.

Traditionally, the lead-up to the autumn festivities in the Dooars and Terai regions was marked by intense labor unrest, including gate meetings, protests, and highway blockades as workers fought to secure their dues. However, this year marks a significant departure from the norm.

An advisory has been issued guaranteeing a 20% bonus across the region’s approximately 275 tea estates, supporting a workforce exceeding three hundred thousand laborers.

In Jalpaiguri district alone, which houses 90 large and small tea gardens, the timely payout has brought profound relief to daily-wage earners. For these households, the festival bonus serves as a financial lifeline used to cover essential expenses, from buying new clothes for their children and preparing festive meals to undertaking long-delayed household repairs.

While political figures and administrative officials engaged in regional oversight—navigating recent travel disruptions due to adverse weather via virtual consultations from Uttarpara—the focus remained firmly on worker welfare. Local laborers expressed immense satisfaction that the annual anxiety surrounding bonus negotiations has been lifted without the need for prolonged agitation, allowing families to begin their holiday preparations early.
