In a significant operation against wildlife trafficking, Tarak Nath Ghosh, the mastermind behind a reptile smuggling network, was apprehended by the Madhya Pradesh State Tiger Strike Force in collaboration with the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau. The arrest took place in Kanpur on Sunday, marking a notable achievement in the efforts to combat illegal wildlife trade.

Connections to International Smuggler

Ghosh is linked to a smuggling gang previously associated with Chennai-based wildlife trafficker Manivannan Murugesan, who was arrested in 2018. Ghosh has been sought in connection with three cases involving the illegal trade of turtles and gharials, which have been documented in Madhya Pradesh. His successful evasion over the years has ended with this recent arrest.

Modus Operandi of the Racket

According to officials, Ghosh facilitated the trafficking of gharials and turtles, sourcing them primarily from the Chambal and Yamuna rivers. He then transported these reptiles to Bangladesh. Ghosh operated predominantly from Kolkata, where he managed the logistics of his illegal activities. His arrest is expected to impact the operations of his network significantly.
