Tamil Nadu CM Stalin Appeals to PM Modi for Citizenship Rights for Sri Lankan Tamils

The CSR Journal Magazine

Chief Minister MK Stalin of Tamil Nadu has formally requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to facilitate pathways to citizenship and long-term visa relief for Sri Lankan Tamils residing in the state for several decades. In a recent communication via X, Stalin emphasized the necessity for a “humane legal solution” to address the status of these individuals, many of whom entered India with the approval of the Indian government and should not be regarded as illegal immigrants.

Key Statistics Highlighted

The Chief Minister pointed out that approximately 40 percent of the Sri Lankan Tamils in Tamil Nadu were born in India. He stressed the need for governmental recognition of their long-standing presence and pleaded for citizenship rights to be conferred upon them. Stalin articulated, “Honourable Prime Minister, Sri Lankan Tamils living in Tamil Nadu came here with the support and approval of the Government of India. They have been living on Indian soil for over 30 years.”

Specific Requests Made to the Union Government

Stalin further detailed his proposals to the Union Government, which include revoking previous administrative directives that impede citizenship applications, waiving passport and visa requirements for those applying, and delegating powers to district-level officials to streamline the process. He also called for formal clarification regarding the legal status of registered Sri Lankan Tamil nationals who have been sheltered in India as of January 9, 2015.

Proposals for Administrative Changes

Among the specific measures Stalin requested are the rescission of restrictions that currently limit the consideration of citizenship applications from Sri Lankan Tamils, issuing an executive order to waive associated passport and visa requirements based on verified identity documentation from the Tamil Nadu Government, and conducting a formal clarification on the legal standing of registered Sri Lankan Tamils sheltered in India. He appealed for appropriate powers to be granted to district authorities for expedited processing of these applications.

Focus on Upcoming Elections

In a separate address, Chief Minister MK Stalin reflected on the achievements of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party and expressed optimism about winning the forthcoming state assembly elections. Speaking at a conference for party agents in Tirupathur, he urged DMK supporters to engage actively in their electoral efforts. The Chief Minister directed party members to communicate the government’s initiatives effectively and encouraged them to secure at least 50 votes each to enhance the likelihood of victory in over 200 constituencies.

Commitment to Welfare Initiatives

Stalin reiterated the state government’s dedication to the continuation of welfare programs and development projects for the benefit of the Tamil Nadu populace. He highlighted the importance of grassroots efforts in relaying the government’s accomplishments to the electorate and bolstering support for the party as it prepares for the upcoming electoral challenge.
