Sunetra Pawar Launches ‘Come Early, Go Early’ Initiative for Women Government Employees

The CSR Journal Magazine

Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister, Sunetra Pawar, unveiled her first initiative in the legislative council with the announcement of the “come early, go early” scheme, tailored for women government employees in Mumbai. The launch coincided with International Women’s Day, aiming to assist women working under the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in navigating the challenges posed by peak-hour traffic. The initiative allows women to start their workday between 9:15 am and 9:45 am and enables them to leave earlier in the evening by the same number of minutes they arrive ahead of schedule.

Focus on Women’s Safety and Welfare

In her address, Pawar emphasized the government’s commitment to enhancing women’s safety and welfare in the state. She referenced ongoing efforts, including Operation Muskan and Operation Shodh, which have successfully located thousands of missing women and children, a trend expected to continue into early 2026. To further enhance these efforts, the establishment of 51 Bharosa Cells and dedicated Missing Cells across all districts was also highlighted.

Advancements in Maternity Leave

Pawar also announced significant changes to maternity leave policies for women employees, who are now eligible for 180 days of leave. Furthermore, an additional year of leave at half pay can be requested, allowing women to balance their professional commitments with childcare responsibilities. This initiative reflects the government’s intention to eliminate the difficult choice many women face between career advancement and family obligations.

Economic Initiatives for Women

On the economic development front, Deputy Chief Minister Pawar highlighted various initiatives, including the Ladki Bahin and Lakhpati Didi schemes, along with the Fourth Women’s Policy. This policy aims to combat sexual and gender-based violence and also encompasses improvement in education, health, and nutritional support for women. Additionally, she mentioned platforms like Umed Mall and Mahalakshmi Saras, designed to facilitate self-help groups in promoting and selling their products online, thereby enhancing their market reach.

Addressing Social Issues

The Deputy Chief Minister also emphasized the importance of the Adishakti Abhiyan, which targets the issues of child marriage and school dropout rates in rural sectors of the state. By referring to notable social reformers such as Savitribai Phule and Ahilyabai Holkar, she underscored the principle that women’s empowerment should encompass not only financial support but also social dignity and security.
