Indian Mixed Martial Arts athlete Suchika Tariyal achieved a significant milestone by securing the nation’s inaugural bronze medal in MMA at the Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya. This achievement was confirmed on Monday, marking a pivotal moment for the sport in the country. Although her compatriot Varun Sanyal faced a setback and could not participate due to medical reasons, Suchika succeeded in showcasing her talent on an international platform.

In her path to the medal, Suchika faced Singapore’s Hui Hoon Teo in the bronze medal match, where she unfortunately suffered a 2-0 defeat. Nonetheless, her performance elevated the visibility of Indian MMA, and her journey in the competition has been hailed for its importance to the rising sport within India.

Suchika’s Path to the Semifinals

Suchika reached the semifinals of the women’s traditional 60kg MMA event on Sunday by defeating Altanchimeg Baigalmaa. Despite experiencing aggressive attacks from her opponent in the second round, Suchika’s solid defence allowed her to maintain control throughout the contest. She executed a crucial reversal that led Baigalmaa to the ground, and this strategic move ensured her victory and her place in the semifinals.

This victory was particularly notable as it not only secured India’s first medal of the Games but also underscored Suchika’s skill and determination in the face of formidable competition. The moment represented a significant step for Indian athletes in combat sports, emphasising the growing prowess of the country’s representation in MMA.

India’s Mixed Results in Other Events

On the same day, India’s performance was varied across different sports at the Asian Games 2026. In soft tennis, the mixed doubles duo of Aadhya Tiwari and Jay Meena demonstrated their skill by winning their Group B matches decisively, starting with a 5-0 victory over Cambodia’s Viva Chao and Chanroseka Khun. They continued their success with another win against Mongolia’s Bud Nyamdorj and Enkhkhuslen Ganbaatar, while preparing for an upcoming match against South Korea.

In shooting, the Indian team of Rudrankksh Patil, Parth Mane, and Himanshu Dhillon excelled by earning a silver medal in the men’s 10m air rifle team event with a score of 1890.1, trailing behind China, which scored 1899.0. South Korea completed the medal tally with a bronze at 1841.4. This achievement marked the third silver medal for India in shooting during the ongoing Asian Games.

Furthermore, individual performances in the shooting event saw Rudrankksh securing a spot in the men’s 10m air rifle individual final with a third-place finish, while Himanshu followed closely at seventh. Parth Mané placed 11th. India’s team has consistently displayed strong performances, particularly in shooting competitions.

In addition to these events, Srihari Nataraj progressed to the finals of the men’s 50m backstroke swimming event, highlighting the breadth of talent in Indian sports, although some competitors did not advance in their respective categories. Notably, the Indian women’s table tennis team achieved a straightforward 3-0 victory against Pakistan, further contributing to India’s overall medal tally at the Games.
