Students Stranded in Iran Permitted to Exit via Land Borders; End-of-Term Exams to Be Rescheduled

The CSR Journal Magazine

Tehran has announced that foreign nationals, including a number of Indian students stranded in the country, are now allowed to leave through its land borders. This decision comes as tensions rise in the West Asia region. Those affected will be permitted to take their term-end exams and present their doctoral theses at a later date, with specific details to be shared subsequently by the country’s Ministry of Science. This move follows the temporary closure of universities and public institutions, along with the suspension of international flights due to airspace restrictions.

Impact on Students

Students across several cities, including Tehran and Urmia, are facing significant limitations in accessing essential services such as healthcare and education. These institutions have halted operations for a period of 15 days amid escalating tensions. Indian officials have consistently urged students to evacuate; however, the closure of airspace and various logistical impediments have made this process challenging. Reports indicate that communication has been severely disrupted, creating further complications for those seeking assistance.

Student Experiences

Ayesha, a student from Srinagar, shared her alarming experiences, stating that access to the internet has been cut off and alarming sounds of bomb blasts are pervasive. She reported a lack of cooperation from her university when it came to evacuation, as they warned that leaving could result in academic setbacks. Ayesha expressed gratitude for the support of the Indian embassy, noting that they remain in touch despite the complex circumstances surrounding evacuations.

Growing Tensions on the Ground

Another student, Musarraf, described the atmosphere in Urmia as tense, recounting sightings of missile activity in the area. He indicated that the university has begun to facilitate assistance, including plans to transport students to border areas with Armenia or Azerbaijan. Musarraf emphasized the need for prioritizing these students during evacuation efforts, reflecting an urgent call for international support as challenges continue to mount.

Embassy Support and Communication Issues

The Indian embassy remains actively engaged with students, offering updates on potential evacuation routes to nearby countries amid the ongoing crisis. Officials have acknowledged that with international airspace still restricted and incidents of missile activity persisting, organizing an immediate evacuation is complicated. As reports of safety concerns and communication blackouts continue to rise, the urgency for coordinated international action to facilitate the safe return of these students is becoming increasingly critical.
