The situation at the Samras Hostel, located near Gujarat University in Ahmedabad, has prompted a significant protest from students following reports of worms found in their food and a lizard discovered in the drinking water. The incident escalated tensions among the hostel’s residents, with approximately one hundred students participating in demonstrations against negligence by the hostel authorities. This facility reportedly accommodates over 750 students and relies on a contracted agency to provide meals.

The issue gained traction after students took photographs of the contaminated food and circulated them widely. Anger boiled over as students, joined by members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), confronted the hostel management, calling for accountability from the agency responsible for food provision.

Repeated Complaints and Minimal Action

According to students, this incident was not isolated but part of a troubling pattern. They alleged that worms had previously been found in their food on three occasions. Despite raising their concerns multiple times, they reported no substantial action had been taken beyond issuing notices to the agency involved. Students claimed they were previously discouraged from documenting such incidents, but this recent occurrence prompted them to gather evidence.

In their protest, students expressed frustration about the lack of meaningful responses to prior complaints regarding the food quality and hostel menu. They emphasised that their health and safety should not be compromised, insisting that the focus must shift from mere notifications to actual repercussions for those responsible. “Our demand now is for concrete action against the warden and the agency,” a student stated, articulating a collective sense of urgency regarding dietary safety.

The students underlined their commitment to ensuring that such incidents do not recur, pointing out that simply notifying the agency had proven ineffective in maintaining standards. They demanded a more rigorous approach to monitoring the quality of food and safety standards within the hostel.

Official Response and Inspection Actions

In response to the rising tensions and protests, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s Food Department undertook an inspection of the hostel premises. During this inspection, officials collected food and water samples for analysis, which could further inform necessary corrective actions.

Following the review, a penalty of Rs 25,000 was imposed on the food agency for failing to meet hygienic standards. The ABVP has called for more stringent measures, including blacklisting the agency, arguing that its consistent failure to uphold quality guidelines jeopardises student well-being.

The Social Welfare Officer responsible for Samras Hostel defended the existing procedures, stating that notifications are sent to the food agency whenever incidents occur. The officer reassured that student safety remains a priority, asserting that appropriate actions will be taken in compliance with established regulations in the wake of such complaints.

This ongoing situation at the Samras Hostel reflects broader concerns regarding food safety in hostels and the need for effective oversight to ensure student health and welfare are maintained.
