State witnessing ‘exfiltration, not infiltration’ across Bangladesh border: Tripura CM

The CSR Journal Magazine

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has stated that the state is now witnessing “exfiltration rather than infiltration” across the India–Bangladesh border, despite Tripura’s vulnerable geography of being surrounded by Bangladesh on three sides.

According to an official statement, the Border Security Force (BSF) apprehended 57 illegal Rohingya immigrants and 628 Bangladeshi nationals in various operations this year.

Saha said the BSF has been instructed to return anyone crossing the border illegally after consultation with the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and following all legal protocols. The chief minister emphasized that the Centre has adopted a strong stance against infiltration.

Challenging terrain along Tripura’s 856-km border

The chief minister acknowledged that securing Tripura’s 856-km international border remains difficult. Several portions of the frontier consist of uneven terrain and riverine stretches where fencing cannot be erected. Despite this, Saha lauded the BSF, saying, “Despite these challenges, the BSF is doing its best to secure the border.”

Addressing reports that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in some states has prompted exfiltration, Saha said many individuals who had been living in India using fake documents are now leaving.

“Those living with fake documents will have to leave. After Bihar, SIR will have an impact in West Bengal as well,” he noted.

‘If needed, SIR will happen in Tripura too’

When asked whether Tripura would also undergo SIR, Saha said the Union government has been clear that illegal foreigners will not be permitted to stay or participate in elections. “If New Delhi wants, SIR will be conducted in our state. The presence of illegal foreigners poses a threat to national security,” he said.
Saha dismissed Opposition attacks on the SIR exercise, claiming the process ensures only genuine citizens are included in electoral rolls.

“Infiltration was their political feed, but SIR is being carried out to ensure that only genuine Indians take part in elections,” he said.
