Suspended AAP MLA Kunwar Vijay Pratap Resigns from Punjab Assembly

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Punjab faced a challenging start to the week as Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh, a suspended MLA and former Indian Police Service officer, announced his resignation from the Punjab Legislative Assembly. Singh became the third legislator to resign within a span of two days, raising concerns about the party’s stability ahead of the upcoming 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. His resignation was submitted to Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan.

In a message posted on X, Singh expressed gratitude to the people of Amritsar for their support. He stated, “I will remain indebted to you until my last breath for the love and respect you have shown me.” Singh’s remarks suggested a desire for unity among the populace to address pressing issues such as drug abuse, extortion, and corruption in Punjab.

Singh, who represents the Amritsar North constituency, hinted at a possible shift to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), fuelling speculation about his future political alignment. His resignation follows that of two other AAP MLAs, Chetan Singh Jouramajra and Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra, who resigned from the party’s primary membership on the previous day.

Political Context and Implications

Singh’s resignation comes at a critical juncture for the AAP, which is grappling with internal dissent and external pressures. The party has faced challenges in maintaining its foundational principles, as Singh himself pointed out in his recent criticisms of party leadership. He has voiced concerns regarding the party’s direction under National Convener Arvind Kejriwal and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.

In June 2022, Singh was suspended from the AAP for five years due to alleged anti-party activities, particularly after he questioned the Punjab Vigilance Bureau’s actions against Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia. This suspension marked a significant turning point in Singh’s relationship with the party, as he became increasingly vocal about various issues, including the handling of the 2015 sacrilege incidents and the toxic liquor tragedy in Amritsar that resulted in over 20 fatalities.

Singh’s resignation may signal a broader trend of discontent within the AAP ranks, as the party prepares for the upcoming elections. The departure of three MLAs in such a short period raises questions about the party’s cohesion and its ability to present a united front to voters.

Singh’s Achievements and Future Plans

In his resignation statement, Singh claimed to have achieved “90 per cent targets” during his tenure as an MLA, emphasising his commitment to serving the public. He highlighted his efforts to eliminate the “mai-baap” culture in politics, asserting that he prioritised the needs of the people over personal ambitions. Singh’s focus on community engagement and transparency was evident in his communication with constituents.

Singh also mentioned his involvement in various local issues, including water supply and sewage management, as well as the development of educational institutions in his constituency. He expressed a desire to collaborate with the public to ensure clean governance and effective administration moving forward.

As he steps away from the AAP, Singh’s future political trajectory remains uncertain. However, his resignation and the circumstances surrounding it suggest that he may continue to play a significant role in Punjab’s political landscape, potentially aligning with the BJP or pursuing other avenues to influence state governance.
