Stanzin Jigmet, a young filmmaker from Ladakh, has won a Gold medal at the 53rd Student Academy Awards for his film titled ‘The Dragon Letter’. This achievement has brought global attention to Indian cinema and showcases the talents emerging from remote regions of the country.

The announcement of the winners took place in August, and Jigmet shared his joy on Instagram, reflecting on his journey from Mulbekh, a village in the Indian Himalayas, to recognition at the Academy level. In his post, Jigmet emphasised the significance of storytelling and its ability to transcend geographical boundaries, stating, “Where we come from does not limit how far our stories can travel.” This sentiment highlights the universal nature of film as a medium for personal expression.

The 2026 Student Academy Awards ceremony took place at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on Monday, September 11. The event featured numerous presentations and speeches from notable figures in the film industry, including Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy Directors Branch Governor Jason Reitman.

This year, the competition attracted remarkable participation, with a total of 2,972 entries from 894 colleges and universities globally. Stanzin Jigmet has an academic background that includes a Master’s degree in Film Directing from ESCAC, located in Barcelona, Spain. This educational experience has contributed significantly to his development as a filmmaker, equipping him with the skills necessary to create compelling narratives.

Additionally, Jigmet is the founder of Pixel Challenger Films, a production house based in Ladakh, which aims to elevate local stories and bring them to a larger audience. His commitment to showcasing Ladakhi culture through cinema is evident in his work and is a significant aspect of his creative identity.
