In a video accompanying his post, the Chief Minister addressed the athletes directly, stating, “I am proud that India has won 85 medals in the Asian Games in Japan, 21 of which are gold. Haryana’s contribution of 32 medals, including 14 gold, is commendable.” His message underscored the significance of their hard work in elevating the pride of the state and the country.

India’s Overall Performance at the Asian Games

India finished the 2026 Asian Games with a total of 85 medals, positioning itself fourth in the overall standings. This tally comprised 21 gold, 27 silver, and 37 bronze medals. China dominated the competition with an astounding 341 medals, including 169 gold. Japan and South Korea followed, finishing second and third, respectively.

The performance of Haryana’s athletes was evident across multiple disciplines, showcasing the state’s athletic prowess in areas such as wrestling, boxing, shooting, athletics, and team sports. Notably, the contributions from Haryana were pivotal in bolstering India’s overall medal tally during the Games.

Several athletes, particularly in wrestling, boxing, and shooting, played critical roles in amassing medals, with wrestling achieving its best results since the Jakarta Games in 1962. Indian wrestlers claimed six medals – two gold, two silver, and two bronze – demonstrating the depth of talent within the team.

Notable Achievements and Historic Wins

India’s boxing team brought home three gold and three bronze medals, while the shooting contingent contributed significantly with 15 medals, including three gold. Athletes in various events showcased exceptional skills, leading to athletics becoming the largest medal-producing discipline for India, amassing 24 medals.

In addition to individual sports, India achieved historic victories in team sports with outright victories in cricket, kabaddi, and hockey. The Indian men’s and women’s hockey teams not only secured gold medals but also qualified for the LA 2028 Olympics, marking a monumental achievement for the sport.

This year’s Asian Games marked India’s second-best medal haul in the event’s history, standing just behind the record of 106 medals won in Hangzhou in 2023. The campaign included landmark achievements and Olympic quota spots, further highlighting the monumental role that Haryana athletes played in establishing India’s position on the global sports stage.
