Srihari Natraj has advanced to the finals of the men’s 50 m backstroke event at the ongoing Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. In the heats, Natraj recorded a time of 25.37 seconds, finishing joint-ninth overall across all heats. His fellow swimmer Rishabh Das clocked 25.41 seconds, placing him among the reserves for the finals. This performance demonstrates a commendable effort from both athletes in a highly competitive field.

During the heats, Natraj’s time was 0.57 seconds behind the heat leader, reflecting the tight competition in this category. The format allowed the top ten competitors from the heats to qualify for the finals, providing Natraj with the opportunity to showcase his skills on a larger stage.

Switching to the sport of sepaktakraw, Team India began their three-match regu series against Japan with a confident 2-0 victory. The first set saw India come back from being down 5-10 to clinch the set 15-13. The Indian team maintained their composure, securing a win in the second set at 15-9, highlighting their strong performance in this initial confrontation.

Mixed Outcomes in Wushu Competitions for India

In the women’s changquan final of Wushu, Indian athlete Nyeman Wangsu finished in 15th place, which continued the nation’s challenging run in the sport. Wangsu achieved a score of 9.573, with breakdowns of 4.90 for quality of movement, 2.673 for overall performance, and 2.00 for degree of difficulty. This score placed her behind competitors from Hong Kong, Macao, and Indonesia, who won gold, silver, and bronze respectively.

The gold medal was awarded to Hong Kong’s Sham Hui Yu Lydia, who scored 9.713, just ahead of Macao’s Sou Cho Man at 9.710 and Indonesia’s Widodo Eugenia Diva at 9.706. These results suggest a competitive environment, particularly for Indian participants.

Earlier in the competition, Aparna Dahiya faced a 0-2 defeat against Iran’s Sogand Sinkaeichetan in the women’s 52kg Sanda Round of 16. Despite her remarkable victory at the 11th Sanda World Cup in Macau in May, Dahiya was unable to replicate her success in this round. She lost both rounds decisively with a 5-0 scoreline, thus exiting the tournament.

Additional Wushu Challenges for Indian Athletes

In another setback for India’s Wushu team, Vikrant Baliyan also exited the men’s 75kg Sanda competition after a 0-2 defeat to Iran’s Soheil Mousavi in the Round of 16. Mousavi maintained a dominant performance, winning each round with a score of 5-0, thus advancing to the quarterfinals. This resulted in an early end to the Indian campaign in the Sanda events of the competition.

Wushu has historically posed challenges for Indian contenders during such international events. The results from these recent matches highlight the competitive landscape and underscore the need for continued development and support for athletes in the sport.
