Sri Lanka Completes Historic ODI Chase Against England

The CSR Journal Magazine

Sri Lanka accomplished a monumental feat in one-day international cricket by successfully chasing down England’s total of 429 runs, finishing with a score of 430 for 8. This match, held in Rawalpindi on Thursday, October 22, 2026, marked one of the most significant run chases in ODI history. The achievement ranks as the second-highest successful chase in ODI cricket.

It follows South Africa’s famous pursuit of 435 runs against Australia in 2006. The match was characterised by an extraordinary display of batting from both teams, with England’s captain Harry Brook scoring a remarkable 202 runs. Sri Lanka’s successful chase not only secured a thrilling two-wicket victory.

But it also highlighted the high-scoring nature of the contest, which saw a total of 859 runs scored, making it the second-highest aggregate in ODI history. This victory also represented only the third instance of a successful chase exceeding 400 runs in ODI cricket, following South Africa’s achievement in 2006 and India’s recent chase of 406 runs against the West Indies in Guwahati.

Record-Breaking Boundary Count

The match in Rawalpindi set a new record for the number of boundaries in an ODI, with both teams collectively hitting 93 fours and 30 sixes. This surpassed the previous record of 87 fours, which was established during a match between Australia and South Africa in 2006. The total of 552 runs scored through boundaries also eclipsed the former record of 532 runs set in a 2019 ODI between West Indies and England.

England contributed significantly to this tally with 48 fours, equalling the joint second-highest number of fours hit by a team in an ODI. Sri Lanka added 45 fours to their total. The overall match aggregate of 859 runs also became the highest recorded in a List A game in Asia, surpassing the previous record of 825 runs. Sri Lanka’s final score of 430 for 8 stands as their second-highest ODI total, trailing only their 443 for 9 against the Netherlands in 2006.

Historic Individual Performances

Harry Brook’s innings was particularly noteworthy, as he became the first England player to score a double century in ODIs, reaching the milestone in just 114 balls. He ultimately finished with 202 runs off 116 deliveries, marking the highest individual score in an ODI defeat. This record surpassed the previous highest of 194 not out by Charles Coventry for Zimbabwe against Bangladesh in 2009.

Brook’s performance propelled England to their total of 429 for 4, with contributions from Joe Root, who scored 69 runs, Tom Banton, who made 50, and Will Jacks, who remained unbeaten on 66 runs. Despite his impressive innings, Brook expressed disappointment at the loss, stating that the achievement held little value in the context of the match. In the context of losing performances, Brook’s score of 202 now ranks as the highest in ODI history for a player on the losing side.

Sri Lanka’s Late-Game Heroics

Sri Lanka’s successful chase was bolstered by significant contributions from Avishka Fernando, who scored 97 runs, and Pavan Rathnayake, who made 130 runs off 106 balls. Their partnership of 166 runs for the third wicket was pivotal in stabilising the innings after Sri Lanka lost two early wickets. Rathnayake further added 133 runs with Dasun Shanaka, who scored 97 runs off 50 balls.

Dunith Liyanage’s unbeaten 61 runs off just 27 balls played a crucial role in guiding Sri Lanka to victory, particularly in the final overs. The team scored 170 runs in the last 15 overs, setting a new record for the highest total in that phase of an ODI match. With six runs needed from the final two balls, Janith Liyanage sealed the victory by hitting a six off Josh Tongue, marking a memorable win for Sri Lanka and a second consecutive defeat for England in the ongoing Pakistan tri-series.
