Siliguri Court Sentences Former Excise Superintendent to 4 Years for Bribery, Imposes Rs 40,000 Fine

The CSR Journal Magazine

A special court of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in Siliguri has sentenced a former Superintendent of Central Excise to four years of rigorous imprisonment in connection with a bribery case. Achintya Kumar Pramanik, who held the position of Superintendent under the Assistant Commissioner of Central Excise and Service Tax in the Cooch Behar Division, was found guilty of soliciting a bribe. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 40,000 on him during the sentencing on Thursday.

Background of the Case

The case against Pramanik was initiated by the CBI on September 14, 2015, following complaints that he had demanded a bribe of Rs 1 lakh from the owner of a private business. The investigation began when the agency received information regarding the alleged corrupt practices of the accused. Subsequently, the CBI arranged a sting operation.

Details of the Sting Operation

On September 15, 2015, operatives from the CBI executed the sting, during which Pramanik was purportedly caught in the act of demanding and accepting Rs 30,000 from the complainant as part of the bribe. Following the successful operation, the agency seized the bribe amount from Pramanik, which contributed significantly to the case against him.

Investigation and Chargesheet

After conducting a thorough investigation, the CBI filed a chargesheet against Pramanik on December 30, 2015. This legal action laid the groundwork for the subsequent trial, where evidence gathered during the investigation was presented in court.

Trial Outcome

After evaluating the evidence and hearing testimonies, the court concluded the trial with a guilty verdict against Pramanik. This conviction underscores the agency’s commitment to addressing corruption within public offices and serves as a warning against similar unethical practices.
