The CSR Journal Magazine

Union Home Minister Amit Shah convened a meeting with Gorkha Members of Parliament, Members of the Legislative Assembly, and leading figures in Siliguri on August 22. The discussion focused on addressing the long-standing aspirations and issues faced by the Gorkha community. This meeting also included participation from the Chief Minister of West Bengal, highlighting the collaborative approach to resolving these matters.

Shah emphasised the government’s dedication to finding a “just, dignified, and lasting resolution” for the Gorkha people. Through a post shared on social media platform X, he articulated that the government is committed to addressing the community’s genuine concerns within the constitutional framework. Shah reassured the participants of the government’s intention to honour their aspirations while safeguarding their identity and ensuring a prosperous future.

According to Shah’s statement, the government aims to develop a practical roadmap to meet the community’s needs, reiterating the importance of constructive dialogue in fostering a collaborative atmosphere for decision-making.

Formation of Committee to Address Issues

General Secretary of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha, Roshan Giri, announced that a committee would be established under the leadership of interlocutor Pankaj Singh. This committee is expected to assess the issues discussed during the meeting and formulate a proposal for the Centre. Giri emphasised that any potential resolution would strictly adhere to constitutional parameters as stated by Shah.

BJP MP Harsh Vardhan Shringla commented on the meeting’s significance and described it as a crucial step towards achieving a positive outcome regarding the Gorkhaland issue. He pointed out that the process of finding a resolution has formally commenced, and the newly formed committee will delve into the details of this matter.

Although Shringla noted that no specific timeline has been established for the resolution process, he highlighted the need for a thorough examination of the issues at hand. This initiative signals a commitment to engage meaningfully with the community and consider their aspirations earnestly.

Security Concerns and Further Engagements

During the meeting, BJP MP Khagen Murmu raised concerns regarding security threats in North Bengal, specifically referring to the strategic importance of the Siliguri Corridor. Murmu articulated the necessity of addressing potential threats that could disrupt this crucial passage, known as the “Chicken’s Neck,” and reinforced the need for heightened security measures in the region.

Earlier in the day, Amit Shah conducted a security meeting focusing on the Siliguri Corridor’s significance. This involvement demonstrates the government’s prioritisation of regional security and stability in addition to addressing the community’s aspirations.

Additionally, on the previous day, Shah had participated in a traditional meal known as ‘Bada Khana’ with personnel from the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) in Siliguri. He described this tradition as a vital bonding experience that strengthens the relationship between officers and soldiers, contributing to a shared sense of purpose and commitment towards their duties.
