Shreyas Iyer Credits Mindset Shift, Practice for Improved Play Against Short Balls

The CSR Journal Magazine

Shreyas Iyer, the captain of Punjab Kings (PBKS), has shared insights into how he addressed criticism regarding his handling of short-pitched deliveries. During a recent interview on JioStar, Iyer attributed his transformation to a combination of a positive mindset and dedicated practice. The doubts surrounding his ability to tackle short balls served as a significant motivator in his career. “People said I would never fix my short-ball problem. That triggered me. I wanted to prove them wrong by performing well,” he explained.

Adopting an Aggressive Approach

Iyer stated that he has shifted towards a more assertive batting style when facing short deliveries. “Earlier, I would just take a single or try to keep the ball down. But now my mindset has changed. If I see a short ball in my zone, I am going to hit it for a six,” he noted. This change is reflective of his commitment to improving his performance in challenging situations.

Mentor Guidance and Practice Strategy

The PBKS skipper acknowledged the significant contributions of his long-time mentor Pravin Amre and batting coach Abhishek Nayar in refining his batting technique. He emphasized the necessity of realistic practice sessions, stating, “During my batting practice, I try to play around 50 overs and face over 300 balls. That helps me understand what works for me.” This extensive training regimen allows him to build confidence in his abilities.

Importance of Facing Real Bowlers

Iyer highlighted the advantages of practicing against actual bowlers rather than relying solely on throwdowns, stating that this approach enhances his clarity and movement at the crease. “The more I face bowlers, the clearer my movement becomes. I focus on creating a rhythm,” he remarked. The focus on realism in his training is aimed at preparing him for match scenarios.

Inspiration from Cricket Greats

Drawing inspiration from cricket legends such as AB de Villiers, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli, Iyer emphasized the significance of timing and balance in his batting technique. “Just before the bowler delivers, I try to get into my position quickly. That creates a flow,” he stated. This dedication to the art of batting is evident in his desire to mimic the preparations used by successful players.

Inner Drive to Overcome Doubts

Iyer spoke candidly about his motivation to prove detractors wrong, particularly in challenging circumstances. “I have people around me who say that in this situation, you can’t do it. It’s impossible. I don’t like hearing that. As a cricketer playing at the highest level, I just can’t accept it,” he explained. His resolve deepens when faced with challenges, prompting him to push himself harder.

Resilience After Injuries

Reflecting on past injuries, Iyer shared how his mindset has played a crucial role in his recovery process. “When I had my back injury, some people said I would never be the same again. I asked myself, why can’t I be?” This inner dialogue embodies his commitment to maintain focus and determination in the face of adversity.

Recent Success in IPL

As of the ongoing IPL 2026 season, Iyer has led the Punjab Kings to six consecutive victories, marking a significant achievement in T20 history by securing the highest successful run chase. The team defeated Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi, successfully chasing a record target of 265 runs with seven balls remaining. Currently, PBKS holds an unbeaten record with six wins and one no result, accumulating 13 points. Their next challenge will be against Rajasthan Royals (RR) on April 28.
