Shashi Tharoor Convoy Halted in Kerala, Staffer Assaulted; Two Held

The CSR Journal Magazine

Shashi Tharoor’s convoy was reportedly halted by a group of men while travelling through Malappuram district in Kerala on Friday. The incident unfolded as the Congress Member of Parliament was en route to Wandoor to campaign for the United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate A. P. Anilkumar. Tharoor’s team has stated that they were in two vehicles when approximately eight individuals obstructed their path.

According to reports, the attackers prevented Tharoor’s vehicle from proceeding. A member of Tharoor’s security team intervened by exiting the vehicle, at which point he was allegedly assaulted by the group. Local law enforcement officials have indicated that there appears to be no political motive behind the attack; however, a case was registered, and two suspects were taken into custody for further investigation.

Tharoor’s Campaign Remarks

While continuing his campaign in Wandoor, Tharoor expressed optimism regarding the UDF’s prospects in the upcoming Kerala Assembly elections. He stated that the party is confident of achieving a majority in the polls scheduled for April 9, with vote counting to occur on May 4. In response to questions about potential candidates for Chief Minister should the UDF come to power, Tharoor clarified that such decisions would be made by the Congress High Command, following consultations with elected members.

Tharoor emphasised the UDF’s focus on job creation, underscoring the need for improved economic opportunities within the state. He noted that many residents are leaving Kerala in search of better prospects elsewhere, remarking, “We must create job opportunities here. We are going to win. The momentum is with us.”

The MP further elaborated on the significance of developing Kerala and addressed ongoing concerns regarding employment within the state. Tharoor reiterated the necessity of addressing these issues to ensure the state’s progress and stability.

Criticism of Government Policies

In addition to campaigning, Tharoor spoke out against the recently introduced Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026. He described the legislation as detrimental, asserting that it unfairly targets institutions like schools, hospitals, and orphanages operated by religious organisations. Tharoor has urged that the bill be submitted to a standing committee for additional evaluation, highlighting concerns regarding governmental overreach in these sectors.

The MP’s remarks about the bill reflect a broader criticism from opposition parties regarding governmental policies that may negatively affect civil society organisations. Tharoor’s advocacy for these institutions underscores his ongoing commitment to ensuring that essential services remain accessible and protected from political interference.

Tharoor’s statements and the recent incident involving his convoy suggest a backdrop of heightened tensions as Kerala approaches its elections. As the campaign intensifies, the actions of political figures and their supporters could play a pivotal role in shaping voter sentiment and participation in the electoral process.
