Seven arrested in lynching of Hindu youth in Mymensingh: Muhammad Yunus

The CSR Journal Magazine

The lynching of a Hindu youth in Bangladesh’s Mymensingh district has triggered widespread outrage across the country, raising serious concerns over minority safety, law and order, and political stability. Bangladesh’s interim government on Saturday confirmed that seven people have been arrested in connection with the incident.

According to the Yunus administration, the deceased has been identified as Dipu Chandra Das, 27, a follower of Sanatan Hinduism. The incident took place in the Baluka area of Mymensingh district.

Chief Adviser of Bangladesh’s interim government, Muhammad Yunus, disclosed details of the arrests in a post on social media platform X. “The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested seven suspects in connection with the lynching of Dipu Chandra Das (27), a Sanatan Hindu youth, in the Baluka area of Mymensingh,” Yunus wrote.

Seven arrested after RAB raids

A statement released by the Rapid Action Battalion identified the arrested accused as Md. Limon Sarkar (19), Md. Tareq Hossain (19), Md. Manik Mia (20), Ershad Ali (39), Nijum Uddin (20), Alamgir Hossain (38), and Md. Miraj Hossain Akon (46).

Muhammad Yunus said the arrests were made following simultaneous raids conducted by RAB-14 across multiple locations in the Mymensingh region. “RAB-14 conducted raids in various areas and arrested the aforementioned suspects,” he added.

The lynching occurred at a time of heightened political and social unrest in Bangladesh. The situation has become increasingly volatile following the recent death of youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi, a prominent figure in last year’s student-led July uprising and a spokesperson for the Inqilab Manch.

Hadi reportedly died on Thursday while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Singapore. He had been shifted there in critical condition after being shot in the head by masked assailants in Dhaka on December 12.

Government condemns lynching, appeals for restraint

On Friday, a day before the arrests were announced, Bangladesh’s interim government strongly condemned the lynching and appealed to the public to maintain calm. In an official statement, the Yunus administration said, “We strongly condemn the beating and killing of a Hindu man in Mymensingh. There is no place for this kind of violence in the new Bangladesh. No one involved in this brutal crime will be spared.”

The statement referred to Sharif Osman Hadi as a ‘martyr’ and urged citizens to stay away from violence, incitement, and the politics of hatred.

Solidarity with media after attacks on press offices

On the same day, the interim government also expressed solidarity with the country’s leading media houses following reports of attacks, vandalism, and arson at the offices of The Daily Star and Prothom Alo. The government strongly condemned the incidents, noting that employees of both media organisations escaped unharmed.

The lynching in Mymensingh has intensified debate across Bangladesh regarding the protection of minorities, the state of law and order, and the broader political stability of the country under the interim administration. The incident has added to the growing challenges faced by the Yunus-led government amid an already tense national atmosphere.
